    Water pump

Gents. Drained coolant, removed the drain plugs on the side of the engine and had a poke about. Flushed out, drained oil and changed the filter. Then moved on to the water pump. Removed the inlet manifold, the water pump came out easily, cage and all. Now my problem. I don't have a vice or any of the special tools described in the ROM so, any advice on how to spilt the water pump and how to re assemble?

        Hi Jason,

I've just dismantled three pumps (long story - don't ask ) without any of the special tools and each of the three gave me different problems in overhauling.

I did use a hole saw to make a large hole in a piece of wood that the brass cage just sat in and that was very helpful. If you can remove the left handed thread bolt ok (an impact driver can help) then a 7 or 8mm socket can provide the right size to drift out the rest of the pump from the impeller. After that, dismantling is pretty easy - graphite seal, water flinger and oil seal just pull off. Bearing circlip proved a bit fiddly but if you can get the right circlip pliers then it's not a problem.

For reassembling, I had a problem getting the bearing, once fitted to the shaft, to sit centrally in the brass cage. In the end Staginhiding suggested fitted the bearing to the cage first of all, which worked and then fitting the shaft and circlip afterwards. All then straightforward until the graphite seal which seemed reluctant to fit on shaft. In the end I dismantled it and used the old one to drive the new metal base of the graphite seal onto the shaft and tthen refitted the rest of the seal.

I used a few lengths of 22 or 28 mm copper pipe that helped as well as a couple of bits of wood with holes that helped.

If you get stuck then please feel free to PM me and I'll be glad to help. After three of the buggers, I feel like a little bit of an expert right now

Good luck - If I can do it then anyone can !

        Cheers

        Julian
