Hi everyone - I have just joined. I live in Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan, I used to own a mark 3 GT6 (and will again one day) but for now I am wanting to buy a really good stag. What would such a car (A1) cost? I am thinking £10k tops? Would a £5,000 one be a better buy if £5k was kept back to spend on it? I look forward to meeting the South and West Wales members. All the best, Andrew

Hello Andrew,
welcome to the SOC, especially the SE Wales branch!
My first car was a Mk 2 Spitfire so Triumphs always in the blood!
You probably know that our branch meets at the Ty Nant in Morganstown on the first wednesday of every month.
7-00pm from April to September and 8-00pm during the winter months.
I joined the club in May 2008 and bought my Stag in September 2008.
My budget was £10k max. which will still buy you a cracking car in A1 condition, not concours but very tidy.
If you buy one for much more than this you'd be afraid to drive it or park anywhere!
The Stag is a car to buy and use i.e. drive as much as possible.
Look forward to meeting you and will happily advise on your prospective purchase.
Regards, John.

For a minute there I thought you were another Aussie mate! I get it now you are a new member from South Wales.... welcome along! You should get a good car for £10k but you could also get a load of hidden trouble so make sure you buy carefully.... if you can buy from a SOC member then you SHOULD do alright.

Hi Andrew
Welcome to the forum, and prospective Stag ownership. I'm sure you will find a decent example with your budget. If you need a "Stag fix" to keep you going, try and get to the Abergavenny show, Whitsun weekend 3rd & 4th June, email me if you can go, and I'll keep a look out for you. (I will even let you sit in and start it so you can soak up the atmosphere)
Good Luck searching

When I was thinking of getting a Stag, a friend in Blighty asked a Stagman in his village where best to look. The response was to look what's for sale in the SOC. This I did and bought a good 'un from a long term owner for exactly your budget. There is always something to do on it, but all the hard work has been done. I read the club buyers guide, but also wish that I had contacted someone local from the club to help me assess it. I never thought about that at the time and had to rely on my general knowledge rather than Stag knowledge, which was near zero.

Thanks for all your tips everyone. The Abergavenny show sounds like a plan. I have only been in Llantwit Major for a few years and haven't heard of the Mafia! I will try and get to the next pub meeting. That's a good idea to take someone along when the time comes for a viewing. Was going to persuade my mechanic if it is not too far. I am told Old English white is the traditional colour but I do like some of the blues and the bright (piemento?) red. My GT6 was originally saffron yellow but the person before me painted it black - it was beautiful. I have seen an amazing blue stag with cream leather piped interior - the photo shows it parked outside a grand old country manor house. I will see if I can find the photo again and post a link....All the best, Andrew

I recognise the building behind the car. It is not a country house, but a semi detached big house in Melksham. I also viewed that car. It was 20K one minute, 19k the next and 18K maybe and then 19K again and non negotiable. The seller was an Ebay person and would win the world championship at waffle and bull. The boy could talk! If you asked the same question twice, you got 2 different answers. It did look good, but was not worth that sort of money. He only had it about 10 months and new very little about it, so I just left. It also reinforced my desire to buy from someone who knew his car.
I saw this one last night for sale in Chepstow - if that is not in Wales, then it is pretty close! At least he can tell you what has been done to it. But it aint cheap!
