    Petrol Additives (Again ) !

    Hi Folks

After dusting my babe down after a winter in storage I decided to buy some Forte Gas (petrol) additive today after a couple of good reviews from friends with newer cars. The blurb goes that the additive has cleaning agents which help remove deposits, lacquers etc from jets and fuel lines after a car has been standing. Now I know these sorts of things divide opinion and get the techno-heads in a bit of a flutter, but you know, I do think it seems to have made a difference. Aside from the obvious placebo factor I do think that the lump is now more free revving and mpg may have improved a tad. I need to give it a bit longer but so far it may, just may have made quite a difference. The Forte products are now a standard part of services on many main stream cars these days though they seems to charge around £40 for the privilege. I bought mine straight from website for £15, good value if it really does improve my existing rather dire mpg.

    Just my thoughts.....

I was works foreman at a Rover Main dealer in Surrey, and we had cause to use Forte Gas and Oil products quite a lot. The 2 litre T16 twin cam had a nasty habit of leaving heavy sticky carbon deposits on their exhaust valve stems if the car was driven gently. We found that introducing raw Forte into the inlet manifold via a vacuum tapping helped quite a bit - it smoked like hell but it was very effective at dissolving this deposit which was causing the engine to run on 2 or 3 cylinders during warm up - the valve would stick, the hydraulic tappet would take up the gap, and then it would be held open until the oil warmed up and the pressure dropped a bit allowing the tappet to release (the oil pumps on those engines were amazing - would regularly see 115psi cold, 90 hot)

It was also quite good at keeping the injectors clean on O and S series engines, which often had a very limited lifespan if run on cheap supermarket petrol - as to helping with MPG, anything that keeps the fuel system cleaner will help, but I can't see it making any real difference. If just being used for routine maintenance, it's as good as the others.

    Just my threepennyworth
