    Tax exempt cars

Sorry really boring subject, and Ive tried looking back over the past postings but couldnt find exactly what I needed..

I am right in thinking that it is the build date that has to be 25 years old and not the registration date.
Is that information only available from Heritage..

Yes, it is the build date. Any car built before 1 Jan 73 is tax excempt.

LD21086. Is the last commission number before you have to start paying tax so if yours is pre this number it is tax free ,after this number you have to pay up

My car was built in 1972 and I have a Heritage Certificate to prove it. But my reg document does not show it as Historic. Has anyone been through the process of getting it changed? How did you go about it?

I seem to recall (from years ago) that you have to visit your Local Taxation Office, but my car is not yet on the road.

                  Hi Chris,

Yes a visit with the paperwork to the local DVLA office gets it sorted. I last did one a few years back, it had not been on the road for years. My local office at Maidstone has always been very efficient and helpful, the only downside is that sometimes you can be in the queue for well over an hour - but they do issue numbered tickets so you can escape for a while.

I would advise not doing it until you are ready to put the car on the road so you can go along with a valid MoT and insurance, they usually then issue a tax disc there and then. Also if you have an old style log book (V5) - single sheet - and you speak to them nicely they take all the details and then give it back to you so you can keep it with the history file of the car.

I walked into Wimbledon DVLA office with the V5, the heritage certificate, the existing tax disc and the MOT for the MGB. The car was built on October 7th 1972, but registered 24th April 1973.

The minion behind the glass at first refused to accept it was historic because of the Reg date and waved me away until I insisted that it was based on the build date, and that maybe his supervisor needed to be called.... he walked off with the docs, and came back 5 minutes later red-faced, without the V5 and told me to expect a revised one in the post. As the existing tax had 3 weeks left, I just left it to expire, and received the new V5 in time to renew...

The standard of staff at DVLA is not good, so if it isn't clear cut with a Reg date before the cutoff, you may have to stand your ground.

I will look forward to my visit to Wimbledon where the Wombles live. It sounds like the DVLA might employ them.
                      Cheers
