    MOT failure

Just had an MOT and it failed on excessive play on the steering rack and a leak from the offside.
The garage said there might be adjustment on the rack ends so can anyone tell me if this is the case or will it be my worst fears that I have got to replace the rack. They said that as long as they dont see any fluid when I bring it back (wipe it off with a rag) they will pass it if the adjustment is done.

    Thanks for any advice

Paddocks used to sell a complete Tie Rod, I would not recommend de shimming the old one to take the play out.

Some seal swell of some description may well buy it a bit more time regards the leak.

How much play is there? In March 2010 I got an advisory for play in the rack. The following year I got a clean pass at the same garage (different tester) and this year I also got a clean pass from the same tester who gave me an advisory in 2010. The same rack is in place and I have done nothing to it other than the routine greasing.

I dont know I have not had a chance to look yet. Can you pack them with grease to take some play out? The garage seemed to think you may be able to adjust them!

You can adjust them with shims, if you can get the shims that is. You can also buy a kit with new PU bushes. I have done this job and its quite an easy one so no need to worry. The leak may be more of a problem unless some seal additive works; I would try that first.

Thanks Andy it might be worth the £15 to stop the leak but not sure it will cure the excess play. If it did that would be great and a cheap fix!

Thank you. Is this something you have done in the past and is it an easy job?

                    Thanks

Andy, I ask this without having made any effort to find the answer first, but how do you top the diff up with the leak sealer?
