    Changing Diff bearings

    Hi all,

I've been quoted between 350 and 400 quid to strip the diff and replace bearings. The bearing in the nose (not the nose extension) is binding because its been leaking so much. There was no seal left at all, so the bearing is causing issues and needs replacing.

Since its costing so much I'm contemplating carrying the work out myself. Has anyone attempted this before? Also the 'special tools' mentioned in the Haynes manual, are these available from anywhere?

Really want to be out in the stag! Only had it 3 months and only been out in it 3 times! :X

    Cheers

It's an easyDIY job to remove and replace the diff, but I don't know anyone who has tackled the replacement any in the internals. Looking through the ROM I'd not even attempt it,I'd just buy a reconditioned unit.Mind you that won't work out any cheaper. If the diff's been leaking the extension bearing will need replacing as well.

I have overhauled a couple, the first I replaced the crown and pinion and had problems (wrong bits?) the second and current due to backlash (cracked thrust washer). Very happy with this one, no noise or leaks.

Stripping is easy, you don't need a spreader for the case but you will need:

      1) Dial gauge and magnetic stand to set it up. No way round this - it has to be right.

      2) If the front bearing has a collapsible spacer then will need lightly pre loading, the torque is below normal torque gauges, I used a socket on the nut with a long T bar and calculated where to hang a bag of flour to just turn it - suffice to say the Mrs was not amused to find oil stains afterwards....

      3) A means of holding the pinion gear while tightening the nut. I used an old cut down quill shaft welded to a lever, others make up a clamp using bolts.

      4) Patience - you will need to take the bearings off several times during setup - if you haven't a good puller then this is a hassle.

Check the price of bits beforehand - replacing the three bearings and oil seal adds up. Also praise for Rimmers, they're the only people I know who stock theplanet gear thrust washers if you need them.

      Cheers
