Key difference between MK1 & MK 2 are clear enough but

    Hi all

    This I am curious about!

Key difference between MK1 & MK 2 are clear enough but some refer to a MK1.5. Which my understanding is the cars built during the change over from MK1 to MK2 and some of the first MK2 got some of the MK1 parts. Then in later years people like us called them MK1 1/2.

    Question is
    1) Am I correct in thinking this?
    2) What was shared or was it different to each vehicle ?
    3) Do we know from and to which commission number these were ?

In the case of my personal Stag when I rebuilt it 10 / 11 years ago I ordered door skins for MK 2 but the locks didnt align up, I was then told to try MK1 door skins and they fitted spot on and I was told by the supplier my car is a MK 1.5 !! would have saved alot if I knew this...

My Stag is commission number LD 22933 and was built on 9th April 1973. If thats any help..

it was a change over period, so yes mk 1.5 lol, there were upgrades along all the production, some subtle some were cosmetic, most of the changes were in the engine on the mk 2's, but you have one in the change over period with, i'm guessing early mk 2 engine and mk 1 dash, if you log onto rimmers web site it will explain some of the changes, and i'm sure more of the guys will correct me, i'm proberbly a little out on my opinion

My car, built between September & November 73 as far as I can workout is a 1.5, all Mk 2 features such as seat's interior light, very early Mk 2 dash and Mk 1 door locks.

Am I right in thinking that Triumph never actually designated cars mark 1 or 2. These were descriptions that just got tagged on ?

And as for what some call the "Phase 3" Stag.... a Mk 2, with body colour back panel, stainless sill covers, a speedo with the trip reset a button on the face, and if auto, a 65 gearbox.....

Mines a Mk2 but with an A in the vin code which means BW65 auto box but is fitted with a BW35 as they did not fit them untill 150 cars after mine, also trip reset is also just under the dash, car registered jan 76.

As with many things connected to BL facts are a little blurred. However a proper Mk2 starts at LD30000, but there was some overlap. My 'Mk1.5' (LD24***) was built after a known Mk2 I have seen with a commission number after LD30000.

It was very common in the 80's to swop parts to make Mk1 cars look like the Mk2 version. We need to remember this as some of the crossover parts have been fitted by us and are not as they left the factory.
As far as I remember having owned Stags back then as well as now is that the early Mk2 or as we call it 1.5 were mailny 1973 cars with Mk2 dials, seats,t bar, bootlid lights, green sundym glass, black rear light panel, etc etc.
Alloy wheels were still an option and the sills were black with a chrome trim above the sill line..
Also remember these cars were sitting in the showrooms for a long while due to the problems they had (sometimes years) so some 1.5 cars were registered as late as N registration so they look all wrong for that reg.
Im sure Ive missed bits and someone will say different...

Does this mean that some M and N reg cars that owners currently pay VED on, might not need to if they checked on the actual build date of their Stag?

I guess that is a possibility, you would need the Heritage certificate to prove it though..
