    Starter motor defunct. HELP!!

    Morning all.
Went to use Staggy yesterday in the sun. ignition on, pump clicked, turned to start. NOTHING! Not even a click. (auto so can't push it!)
I had this on an MGB and it was the starter motor relay. Quick tap and it was away.
Is it likely to be the same problem? I connected battery jump-starter pack and still nothing.
Can anyone tell me where the relay is situated?
I have never had occasion on either of my Stags to get involved under the bonnet so am not very aux fait with the layout of various bits.(apart from the obvious! & I HATE auto-electrics!)
    MAny thanks in anticipation.

Hi Colin, you have not a relay as such (unless one has been fitted after market) if you have pump and ign lights you need to look to the starter solniod or ign switch. Hope this helps Graham

Try cleaning the connections behind the engine near the bell housing, if you are facing the engine from the front it is on the right hand side.
I had the same problem, Kryten suggested it, the connections get very grimey/green, a quick clean and it worked.

Could well be the starter inhibit switch on the gearbox. Silly question but you did have the auto box in PARK when you tried to start it??? if not you will get nothing as you describe. If it has just failed you can sometimes get it to work by moving the gear selector back and forth a few times to exercise the switch. Failing that you can get to the connections via a small access panel (at least you can on a MK1) on the passenger side transmission tunnel. As a temporary fix (NOT RECOMMENDED) you can simply by pass the switch.

If it is the switch - then check that it is correctly adjusted - it can be quite fiddley getting it correct as it does both start inhibit and reversing lights.

If you do need a replacement then shop around as the one listed for a Stag is a lot more expensive than the one listed for a Jaguar/Land Rover (exactly the same switch!). Can't remember the part number at the moment but there is a thread on the forum about it somewhere.

Don't think you can adjust the switch on a Mk2, Terry

If its a MK2 with a BW35 gearbox you can - I think its different on the later cars fitted with a BW65. (not sure about the access plate though!)

Access plate stayed till the last car. There's a certain limited adjustment on the operating rod, though I doubt the switch is the problem. Prob just a shot motor or solenoid - effectively the same thing Martin.

                    Thanks chaps.
It was as some of you said, a sticky inhibitor switch. Couple of too's & fro's of the 'gear' stick and it worked.
Just as a point of interest if there is no relay (Southern Triumph confirmed)why is Mr Hart selling them for £22+. Or is ist differetn for the MkI

It's an aftermarket modification The solonoide pull's a lot of power so the contact's in the ign switch suffer the relay on the mod is operated by the ign switch and the relay directs battery power to the solonoide Graham

If the switch has gone "sticky" once I guarantee it will do it again - each time it will take more "tooing" and "froing" to get it to work and eventually it will fail altogether at the most awkward moment. Start looking for a reasonably priced replacement and then replace it at your leisure. I speak from experience

Remember there is a Jaguar / Land Rover switch which is identical and about half the price of the one listed for the Stag - there is an old thread about it on the forum somewhere.
