    Touring tool kit

I have at long last got my stag back on the road after an 18 month restoration and now I've completed the first few hundred local miles and got rid of the running in oil I'm starting to plan some longer trips hopefully even getting to the South of France later in the summer if she continues to prove reliable.

I'm putting together a reasonably lightweight touring tool-kit to keep in the boot and would be very interested to hear any ideas you may all have about what to include (and what not to bother with).

What did you find vital at the roadside/campsite and what did you wish you hadn't bothered taking?

    So far I have included:
    Selection of screwdrivers
    Set of open-ended A/F spanners (1/4" - 3/4")
    Adjustable 1" spanner
    Pliers/cutters
    Small hammer
    Reel of insulation tape
    Length of insulated wire
Length of galvanised steel garden wire (for tying thing back on which drop off!)
    Assorted cable ties

For longer trips I may also carry some spare parts - again what would you recommend as a sensible list?

On the TR Register website there is the attached download.

Obviously there are some items that are needed for TRs and not Stags, and vice versa but it is a starting point.

A spare fuel pump is a good idea, a roll of duct tape, it's amazing what you can do with it, and a mobile phone with your recovery number in it. Don't overdo it, you'll start worrying that you haven't brought enough. Look to quick roadside fixes, not heavy stuff, Oh, and oil and water. Enjoy, remember, if it ain't fun, don't do it ! Martin.

I have to say, the TR list is very comprehensive, too comprehensive ! It's not difficult to make old cars reliable, that list makes Stag paranoia look mild. Martin.

...but how boring life would be if we had nothing to worry about.

            Peter,

Thanks, good list there - a very interesting spare is the distributor baseplate with the points already set - this could replace my Pirana electronic ignition if it packs up. Also a torch is an excellent idea that I hadn't thought about.

            Thanks Martin,

Gaffer tape and breakdown contact phone numbers now added to my toolkit - good ideas.

Spares kit so far for 'foreign' travel where parts may be hard to get:
Alternator belt (I can live without the power steering to get me to a garage) but maybe not without lights.
            Fuel pump
            Spark plug & plug spanner.
            HT lead
            Rotor arm
            Distributor cap
            Distributor baseplate with adjusted points
            Coil
            Bulbs
            Fuses

            Any more ideas?

I find this is the best piece of Touring Kit - if you do have a problem a nice cup of Tea and a good breakfast normally sorts out most things .

Sounds like you may be needing something like this to get the whole kit in ....

I carry around most of what you have listed plus a pair of needle valves and float chamber gaskets and a couple of the small ball ends for the carb linkages. I also have a universal motor cycle cable repair kit all housed in a little tin. And a set of hoses and a few spare hose clips. and a bottle of K seal for good measure. I put the kit together when I took the car to Jersey and have just left in there. Oh, and some ATF and a gallon of water.

                      Ian.

There's another one of those, same colour but made from the back half - strange ! Martin.
