    Noise / Vibration

    Help Guys !!!
Iv'e just got my stag on the road, first time since I purchased it. Problems..... hope you can point me in the right direction.

Runs great around town, but anything over 50'ish and I get a lot of fine vibration noise from the rear half somewhere. This is my first stag so don't know what to expect..
Soft top up, windows shut 50 /60 on a dual carriageway, and it's so bad the wife and I had to shout at each other to be heard. Is this normal ?

Mk1 auto, been polybushed sometime in the past, with what looks like very dark blue/black/ dark purple.
reinforced diff nose, very slight leak from the front of the diff.
U/J's look OK at a quick glance, but not had chance to fully investigate.

What should I be looking for ???

    Regards
    Steve

Vibration at that speed is most often propshaft related; U/Js, or sloppy fit into the gearbox. If you have had the diff reinforced, the welding may have distorted the casing, which can wreck the nose bearing.

        Steve,

I had something similar, turned out in my case the quill bearing at the front of the diff was goosed. Try grabbing the diff / propshaft flange and moving it up / down & side to side, if there is much movement the bearing is gone and will need replaced.

You mention a slight oil leak at the front of the diff. It could well be that oil has washed out the grease on the quill bearing. As John suggests, try moving the prop up and down and see if there is any play.

Check the gearbox cross member mountings (to body and gearbox)

Often they appear ok when they are not.

I'd go for the Quill shaft bearing as well. I made the mistake of putting a cheap one in mine and it didn't last long at all. I would replace the oil seal and the bearing and see where that takes you.

                Steve,
firstly have your tyres checked balanced then you can rule that out, if it starts around 60 ish thats most likely the culprit and its an easy one. It will not hurt to look at the other suggestions check the diff for oil level also. Let us know what you find.

                cheers Stuart
