    Spitfire (Supermarine type!)

This has just got to be seen to be believed!

The article was written in 2006, so I guess this is now on display at Hendon?

As an ex-modelmaker I stand in awe, but at the same time think how sad it is that such amazing engineering talent finds its outlet in building models of a bygone age.

Mine too. My best view ever was when doing a go around while training at Sleap, and I paralleliing the runway at 500 feet as per regs, when the two seater Spit performed a lazy banking turn right across my nose at the same altitude as he was coming in to land. He should have been at 1000 feet and he wasn't far away from me, so perhaps I should have mentioned it when I got down, but it didn't seem right somehow!!

Fantastic aircraft, second place only to the mighty Lancaster Bomber ... but then again I am biased as my great uncle was in the 617 Squadron and flew as a rear and mid upper gunner, his last raids of the war were on the Tirpitz.

Look at this clip below, it will make you laugh I am sure.. (for those who have already seen it i am sorry)

What an amazing achievement - I can only guess at the patience which that must have taken...

Yes, I've seen a couple of those before, Ian. A fantastic amount of skill and patience; much, much more than I have I am afraid....

Ditto, although the P38 also comes close.

Amazing. I knew a guy who used to design and make small i/c engines which were fascinating, sadly he died a couple of years ago at the age of 90. One of his early single cylinder engines had a cylinder made from a hammer head - I promise you this is true! He made all his own castings and never bought any finished parts.

I'd vote for the Mosquito too - probably influenced by tales of uncle's WWII role exploits in photo reconnaisance in the Far East
