    pants!!

ive just spent 3/4 hr trying to get the battery clamp back in position and doing its job .its the most poo idea for a retainer ive ever come across ive done this countles times over the last twenty odd years and never once has it been a doddle argh.......is it me? i dont think so.
ive got an idea for a nice simple stainless retainer that frees up the area around the terminals ( no arcing )and will make fitting a wheeze im gonna do this as soon as i get spare time.

              Hi Steve

I always find the bracket on the inner wing to be a sod and thought that if this had a thread on the other end at a right angle
you could attach a nut and washer to it to stop the thing from dropping out of the hole.

would be very interested with what you come up keep us posted

Did away with the Battery bracket years ago, and in it's place I have a strong strap that holds the Battery in place and is securely tied to a piece of the bodywork just beneath the bumper. See attached drawing. Battery has never moved yet, and to release it you just have to slacken the clasp that I position just below the bumper. There is a gap in the Battery compartment that allows you to wrap your strap all round the battery then feed down and to the front of the car where I secure it to the centre piece just below the bumper. Simple yet effective.

Except for the pigging steering pump. I'm up for for one of the new clamps too.

Without doubt that's a good point, but how often do you take the battery out ? Martin.

The biggest problem is always the Power Steering system. Not just when you have to change the Battery or Alternator, but I have had to replace the Alternator belt at one time as the old one disintegrated. Only yesterday I got my car back from the chap who puts it through the MOT (ITV),
with a comment that the belt was too loose and I had only recently tightened it up after fitting both a new Alternator and Battery. Turns out the bolt threads had gone again, and I had to replace one of the helicoils with a new one. Also fabricated some small new parts to fill the two adjustment holes in the bracket to stop it slipping again. Took all day and a lot of cursing and cut fingers - but did it in the end - just keeping my fingers crossed that it now stays in place, and when I eventually get round to removing my soft top frame will consider moving the Battery into that space. I know some people say that you are likely to lose some current with a long lead (from the hood well to the starter), but the lead from where the battery currently is goes all round the engine compartment to get to the starter motor on the other side - so it is already quite long.
