Got myself a very nice, Smiths calibrated water temp gauge ( i.e. cold is printed as 30 degrees then dial goes up in stages to 98) as a replacement to the standard issue. I have the normal green/blue wire to the temp sender unit and the other light green wire to the voltage regulator i.e no messing has been attempted with the wiring. Original works fine but the replacement - just back from Speedograph Richfield & I've run diagnostics so I know it works - is wired correctly but after the ignition is switched on, after about 30 seconds, the needle bounces from 30 to mid point and back again rhythmically about every second and a half. Any thoughts out there?? I'm thinking voltage stabilizer but as the original unit works, maybe not. Come to think of it, where is the regulator housed? - is it behind the parcel shelf & under the glove box?? I know there are aftermarket replacements which they all claim are better than the Triumph fit. If I wire directly to any positive live I can find and by-pass the stabilizer am I asking for trouble, will it burn out etc??

The way the voltage stabiliser works is that it is just a switch that continuously goes on and off. The original gauge has a very slow response so you dont see the pulses. Your new gauge may be much faster so it follows the pulsing voltage. If you fit a solid state one I think they are a steady 10 volts which should work OK.
