Vehicles manufactured before 1960 will no longer have to have to pass an MoT

Classic and historic vehicles are to be exempted from yearly MoT tests, the government has announced.
Vehicles manufactured before 1960 will no longer have to have to pass an MoT from 18 November, Roads Minister Mike Penning said.

Should be extended to the original 25 years and over for all classics inc Road Tax

Except we have all seen absolute rotbox cars, that shouldn't be anywhere near a road, that under the 25 year rule could get bodged and sold on to unsuspecting people....

Just have a look at this months Practical Classics at the 59 Austin that as he rightly says could be glassfibred up, a bit of under seal, and then just insured and taxed.

I think the pre 60 test should have stayed, but with classic friendly MOT stations that understand the tolerances they were built to...

I am with Russ on this one - In fact I find it quite worrying. Too many people use their MOT as an annual safety check and some even think it is the same as a service. If we were all as good as the minister says we were at maintaining our cars then no car would ever fail - just look at the number on here that have failed when presented for a test when presumably the owners thought they were OK. Also it acts as a check, admittedly superficial, on things like welding and structural rust. Finally how do you properly test your brakes without a rolling road - especially the rear brakes. All it will take will be a couple of fatal accidents where the classic car is found to be unroadworthy and we will find all sorts of restrictions coming in on their use - not what we want at all. Finally saving £50 odd pounds a year on an MoT whilst nice for those with older cars doesn't do anything for the vast majority of car owners.

Me too - pre-1960 vehicles should definitely still be tested if they are going to be let loose on our roads, just not to the strict standards applied to modern vehicles.

Couple of ideas to add to the mix..... I am not aware of pre-1960 cars being banned from an mot station, you should still be able to rock-up, pay your £55 and have a test done..... (or has that changed as well?) And the new rule does not remove to responsibility of the owner/driver to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy when used on te public highway

You may find, that being all computerised at the mot stations, they may remove pre-1960 cars from the database - that could prevent the test even being started....

Then the only thing you could get is a document from the tester stating that an mot type test was carried out, and the outcome. Not that it would have any validity in the event of a prang....

I can see a larger quantity of pre-1960 Morris Minors coming up for sale soon in addition to them probably being worth a little more, reminds me of when the rolling tax exemption rule was introduced.

Whilst there are pros and cons for it, I believe that pre 60 should still have to be MOT'd, despite them representing less than 1% of all cars on the road today. It is the garages I feel for the most mind you, having less cars to do, probably seeing less of the 'old lot' in addition to their MOT base costs rising recently anyway (with the introduction of the new 'photocopy/A5' certificate).

Agreed that there are no guarantees........ but it would be a good way to demonstrate that you had taken reasonable steps to confirm the roadworthiness of a vehicle which were comparable with the test required by law for newer vehicles.

Perhaps a business opportunity for Classic-aware former mechanics and MOT testers

Did this fellow give reasons for removing pre 60 cars from MOT?
Did he speak to classic car groups? Probably not. I'd still want to know
that my car was safe. We all get nervous when the MOT is due but I'd be happier
having my stag fail on brakes than finding out when it's too late!

Not a good move, what would happen if a pre 1960 car was in an accident and was deemed unroadworthy, which could be proved quite easily by the right people. That would surely mean that the insurance was void.

Excuse my ignorance but is there a current age at which a car does not need an MOT

I wonder if there will be a sudden increase of pre 1960 cars on the roads after november?

The increase as a result of ringers and cars that were restoration projects becoming ‘road worthy’ overnight.

The FBHVC (of which the SOC is a member) ran a survey of it's members.
The final report is here http://fbhvc.co.uk/files/2011/11/MoT...-report-v2.pdf
I submitted my survey (against it).
                            How many of you did?
