    glove box

OK, so I've had the Stag for about 18 months now and made a few minor improvements and feel like I'm getting to understand it better. But there's always a daft surprise waiting.

Over the last month or so, the glove box has started to fall open of its own volition, and getting it to stay shut again was becomong problematic. It's just seemed to rely on a friction jam between the lid and the glove box.

This can't be right, says I, so I take a gander at the ROM, and discover that there should be a striker plate for the lock mechanism!! Not in mine, there ain't. So for over 12 months, the friction jam has kept it shut faultlessly, until recently.

So off I trot to see Martin at JustTriumph who has one available, get back home, try to fit it and lo and behold, the barrel won't pass the striker plate, the back of the barrel hits the plate about half way up the flat edge.

So I'm wondering if the lock has been fitted too high up in the lid, causing the barrel to foul the plate. It's a Mk 1, can anyone tell me how far the center of the key barrel is from the top edge of the lid in their car?

    Thanks

    Gord

I had a similar problem with my glove box, I had to bend the tab on the striker plate to give me that bit more clearance needed, and then I moved it back on the fixing screws/ elongated slots so when the lid was closed it was inline with the rest of the dash.

Thanks for the assistance with this. My barrel centre is abput 320mm, so further down than yours, Graham (hope no-one reads any double entendres into that!). I think I'll have to play around with the striker plate, as Ken suggests.

            Cheers

you can adjust the striker plate forward and backward Gord, that may help, i have a couple of locks some where i think, if you need one give me a shout, it might have a key to it as well

another thought, try taking the striker off and bending the tab backwards a little, then refit and try it again

Hi Alan, thanks for the suggestions. I think bending it backwards would then make it more difficult for the catch to engage as it would increase the distance to go before the lock would engage and the lid would not close far enough as the bend in the tab would prevent it. I think bending it out and moving the tab further back on the elongated holes would be a better idea, or perhaps just some judicious filing!

                  Cheers
