    Vulcan and Stag

Had a terrific day yesterday getting involved with a Practical Classics photo shoot featuring 6 classic cars fitted with British V8s and the Vulcan V Bomber at Finningley Airport. It was blazing hot on the dispersal area and the shoot lasted all day. There were loads of positive comments for the Stag and it attracted loads of attention from the ground crew and the Friends of Doncaster Airport folk who were acting as escorts whilst we were on the live airfield. Before anyone comments the Rover 3500 was deemed to have a British V8 due to the length of time they had been fitted to Rovers.
The shoot brought back loads of memories for me as I used to work for the MOD years ago when the Vulcan was in service. We just took them for granted back then and they were noisy smelly things that interupted our work when we were out repairing the airfield lighting or carrying out building maintenance in the hangers. The one at Finningley is the only remaining flying Vulcan and was an impressive site to see.
The article should appear in the August addition of Practical Classics and to be honest Im not sure my stag fitted in with the other cars as they were pretty standard where as although mine has the original Triumph V8 it is modded from standard in many other ways.

Just need to add that we were also told some details about the missions that these planes flew and what the guys flying them (and we) faced if they were used as they were designed to be used which means I now feel very guilty about taking these machines for granted when they were in service and very happy to still be around to even think about it.

What a fabulous fabulous day, excellent job waving the flag for our side, with such a beautifully presented Stag ! and I echo Kryten's sentiments. Martin.

Great classics. Would like to see a pic of the DBS Aston! Used to work on one of them. it was quite a beast!

The Rover V8 is a British Icon whatever anyone says about it. Whilst it was American to start with it was dead and buried there apparently being to small for American heavy metal cars. Rover bought it and made it work for the British car industry. A classic icon in its own right... The British Car Industry I mean!!

The Aston was nice but in my view didn't sound as good as the Stag. It was interesting to see the various parts that were fitted to it from everyday cars of its time. The back lights are Hillman Hunter units. The car at the shoot had an interesting history in that it was bought new by a lady who lived in the UK but also had a place in Switzerland. She asked for a sunroof, aircon, headlight washers and wipers as extras. The headlight wipers are driven by a worm gear and rotate on the face of the lamp lens. The present owner had restored the car and said they were a swine to rebuild. I'm pretty certain PC will feature these wipers in the article.
During the shoot I could smell oil which I thought was coming from my Stag turned out it was the TVR, sounds like they have similar problems to us with cam cover gaskets.
Surprisingly the Daimler Majestic was the car that to me sounded most like the Stag with the TVR being by far the loudest.

                      I'm very envious of you!

Your car looks fantastic by the way - easily the second best of the group (sorry, but I love Astons )

                      Regards

Sorry guys just had a a late e-mail from PC asking that we dont post any pics on the net until the mag is out so I thought out of courtesy I would remove the pics. Mag will be out in july and I for one will be interested in seeing the professional photos. They will also send me a disc of the pics so I will post some of them once the mag is out.

                          Wow! Very jealous.

I used to have a Hillman Hunter. I can now say it was part Aston Martin

Yeh the back lights are Hillman Hunter; either without the black paint or with it I cant remember which way round, and on the earlier DBS6 and then the 1968/9 DBS V8 (the one with the chrome grill) the front indicators were Ford Cortina MK2 (Modified with hacksaw and drill!) And then a good few parts of the interior were from various fords of the era... But the cars were / are fanb*****tastic! BUT.... What a pain to work on.

                            JUST LIKE MY STAG LOL
