    Radiator dated 04/69

I just received my supergil radiator from Ward and I was amazed when I removed the old one from the car to see the date 04/69, the car is 1972 so it must have been exchanged but I thought that they also stamped the tag with a new date (they did on the Ward). I hadn't overheating troubles but they was a crack at the base of top filling tube and I also noticed once it was removed some damage on fan side. What kind of damage is that ? A torquatrol with too much play

I would has at a guess that that isn't a date I'm afraid. It is a MKII rad so must have been build later than that.

I think you are right on the damage front, definitely been hit by a moving fan. Either a viscous coupling with too much play, or one that has seized causing the fan to rotate at engine speed causing the blades to bend forward.

P.S. I'm off to Normandy on Saturday - St Martin des Besaces. In the Stag naturally!

Either that , or soggy engine mounts, or a shunt. M.

Hi Tony, just checked on google and you are about 90 miles away from where we are staying - the beer's tempting but might be a bit too far.

No idea what we are going to be doing yet (we don't like to be organised on our trips) but if you pm me your mobile I can contact you if we do head in your direction.

            Cheers

Tony. When i took my old radiator out a couple of weeks ago to have a top mounting repaired i discovered it was far from original. It only had two cores and the radiator shop thinks it was recored using a core from a Morris Marina! Now i know why the Kenlowe was always cutting in. Anyway i have had it recored and a couple of extra fittings (header tank inlet and boss for thermostat control) added.

              Cheers

You're right Tim, I checked the radiator and it has been repaired with lots of welding. It was not easy to find a radiator in the States and I think anything which could fit the space was good enough as the car was missing its original engine and had been modified with an american V8 small block. The radiator frame had also been butchered to add the thermo vacuum switch (in place of the top draining tap) for air filter and distributor advance/retard which made a lot of extra welding which couldn't stand the system's pressure if not done properly. Anyway, I will test my new radiator now the water pump and manifolds are back on with Alan's beautifully reconditioned carbs. Fingers crossed for no coolant in the vee, hopefully ! Once again, a bare metal new engine and mechanicals car can prepare for a lot of troubles if it hasn't been properly and regularly driven for ten years.
