    Good day but with issues

Took the stag and the kids to the beach today, Barmouth in mid Wales, just over 100miles away. Very nice weather as you all know, temp gauge under half way. Got to Barmouth and found that the silicon cam cover gaskets are still leaking, I have had real trouble getting these to seal, theyre supposed to be the dogs dangled bit but I think they're crap. They are going in the bin and I'm going back to cheap cork gaskets!! Also my radiator started a very slight weep from the top somewhere, something else to get sorted before le mans. Rad is only 5 years old

Hi Jason, are you sure your cam covers havent spread ? If they have the best gaskets in the world wont seal them.
Over the years people overtighten the cam covers and they become to wide to seal properly.
    Just a suggestion really

Hi, they were fine before I took the covers off to do the timing chains!

Never tried the silicone ones, have had trouble with the cork ones with grease, wellseal...always end up using silicone sealant both sides with cork...always then leak free but a right mess to remove and clean up, but, no leaks.

We need some alloy cam covers so they remain firm. I have enquired at a few places without any joy, does anybody know of a foundry that could produce some?

The silicone gaskets won't cure everything. The right cam cover on my Stag was fine until it was dismantled, then two cork gaskets later it was still leaking. I tried the silicone type without instant gasket and it still leaked, so in the end used instant gasket plus the silicone gaskets and finally bunged it up. At least when it next get removed it should't split so replacement should be simple
The fundamental problem is that the back end is bent up giving a huge gap, not something you can fix easily. Alloy cam covers would be useful

I have used expensive silicon gasket sealer on both sides of the gasket which has left a mess. Quite naft off considering they cost 16 quid each

My ones don't leak, mainly because they are still lurking in the corner of my garage. I think they might stay there after reading this.

I used silicon gasket seal on mine, it leaked from one cam cover from rear and front. I found that the screws needed a bit of tightening up and that cured the leak.
Yesterday I really raced the stag around, just to test out averything ( Temp, Oil pressure, etc ) and the cams were ok no leaks.
I did stick the silicon gaskets on with the sealer to the cam covers first until set then offered them up to the heads...

                      Sukh.

Sikh, I stuck them to the cover only first off, just nipped them up, leaked, tightened, leaked more, stuck both sides nipped up, leaked when hot, tightened leaked more!!! Heads are smooth, covers aren't overly distorted, going back to old tech cork!!!

Need to get my rad sorted now too
