Hi Stewart, a two pound lump hammer and a blunt cold chisel, it helps if you've got a bench vice but you can manage without. Your chances of removing it with a C spanner are somewhere between bugger all and none. Martin.

Don't forget you have to overcome a peened section in the outer tube, and the insert should come with a new screw, in any case, you're only whacking the top ring and not the threads, so it should be re-usable. Martin.

I've always used the hammer and punch method as well.

Just don't expect it to give in easily.

I used the hammer and punch method, followed by the Stillson and body weight method. One tube had buggered threads so I had to buy another 2nd hand one.

Beware if stag has original dampers fitted still, there is a lot of fluid in there which does not do the living room carpet any favours ! Not me but a chum

When fitting new inserts I found that mine could not be tightened down properly, partly the reason for buggering the thread up!!!!!

I bought 2 huge chunky washers and dropped one into each empty strut, the dampers secured beautifully after that.

I drilled 2 holes in a large BSW open ended spanner and fitted some small screws to make a pin wrench. Having said that, I still needed the hammer and drift to get the old ones out, but the hand made pin wrench did make putting the new ones back in a lot easier. Don't forget to peen the tube back over again into the new fixings.

That oil that came out certainly stinks. Mine went into the parts washer fluid!

              Cheers,
              Mike.

I made a four pronged socket.
The "peened" bits were "unpeened" and the screw collar just undid easilly enough.
Comments follow Mike's re the stink of the original oil... wasn't so lucky with the parts washer it went down my leg!
