    Mot

Hi Guys The Stag had its MOT this morning, in the five years i've owned her she's never failed and only two advisories, today she FAILED! the windscreen washer was only working on one side! when I tried myself while still at the garage both worked OK, the tester said he couldnt get them both working together,I tried again two or three times without fault! I asked to see garage manager who came and checked and they worked for him also,so he agreed to issue a pass certificate, whether or not there may have been a fault when the tester tried seems a bit harsh to fail on such a minor thing, theres only one tube going to the jets so if the fluid comes out one side the pump is clearly working. in the old days the tester would of tried cleaning the nozzle before failing.

I got mine to do... will probably do tomorrow or after Monday.Just got to check out the hand brake and adjust accordingly..also a brake bleed should see it right.

    Sukh.

P.s My tester would have fixed/passed the Mot for the windscreen wash problem you had....yes they were being a bit too harse.

      Apologies for off topic....

Can I use/mix DOT 5.1 brake fluid with DOT 4. I need to bleed my brakes, already have DOT4 in it. I am told DOT 5.1 is much better...any views........please.

      Sukh.

Cliff, next time try the Go Service Centre in Terrace Road (Walton) or is that who you used already?

DOT 5.1 is good stuff but it does need to be changed more frequently I understand and it does not always give you better performance. If on a budget ATE Super Blue DOT4 is good VFM and gives good performance for many people hitting the track whereas Motul RB600 is superior to a number of DOT 5/5.1 fluids but cheap it is not (I seem to remember a litre of it costing in excess of £20).

                ??? I thought DOT5.1 has a longer change interval

TBH, the more "modern" the brake fluid formula, it seems the thinner and less viscous it is - designed to be extremely responsive on modern ABS and ESP systems. Not sure if that might lead to a greater leak tendency considering the dubious finish on some of the old school brake and clutch cylinders I've seen.

Agree on Ate Super Blue DOT 4. It seems to be the "industry standard" over here.

The friend i use for MOT testing, very recently went on a VOSA refresher course, what he was told surpised me (i've been in the trade for 30+ yrs) but it would have got your stag passed 1st time.

Remove windscreen, wipers and washers before test and all the tester can do is "pass and advise" even if he see's you refitting damaged parts outside while he's printing the certificate, steve

Well that's my car just passed today as well - the mechanics all gathered around it and all commented on how good she looked both on top and below.

Now having only done 400mls in the past 2 years and only 100mls in the last year, I now have to decide to keep or sell?

The car is so good I don't really need to do anything to it, so kinda got bored with it but my drive to the MOT station has gave me back a bit of enthusiasm again - hence being back on the forum as well.

Great stuff Super Blue is . Well, it seemed to last on our track day 205 and a friend's very heavy right foot .

AFAIK, Whilst silicon fluid lasts quite some time (DOT5) DOT 5.1 does not last any longer than DOT 4, on the containers I have seen, it says to change it every year. Maybe they are perceiving that are heavier on the brakes will used the fluid will use it, but either way 5.1 still needs changes at similar intervals to DOT 4.

Back on topic it is rewarding to have a car that passes an MOT without no real issues .
