    New Project

Oh dear, Ive done it again.
I only have a couple of weeks of respraying work left on my Mallard Toledo, and the thoughts of a tax exempt stag have been bubbling to the surface
One thing I have noticed in this life is that everything you want always becomes available before you really want it, and if you wait until the right time it doesn't come at all.
It is definately too early, which is why a 1972 Stag in primer, oops sorry white, arrived today
Scruffy looking thing that had been fitted with a RV8, but came complete with a very early Stag V8 and 4 speed manual box. Engine no is LF8ESS so a very early factory exchange unit, but with MK2 heads. It turns over, but very stiffly
Bodywork is very original, last on the road in 94, looks like it was taken off to have the ends of the chassis outriggers welded
Its going to look like a ringer as it is going to end up Topaz, then I can have a hardtop one and a soft top one to play with
I have run out of shed space, something is going to have to go!

It's a hard bug to crack isn't it? To not buy another classic. I think I once hit around 4 once and for a while had 3 (if 80s cars are allowed to be in the 'retro/classic' category).

There are people out there to be fair with 6 classics and with most of them rotten beyond repair and I am not talking about traders!

I am on an enforced 3 at the moment, with the Stag, Vitesse and MGB - I keep hinting at the 'need' for a 2.5pi, but with the size of quotation for dental implants I got yesterday, I think the 2.5 is a while off unless the lottery or premium bonds comes up.....

You mentioned in another thread of Dieter's about the ESS significance and was it just stamped on after the original number, Neil.
I was trying to read my clutch problem Stag and couldn't make out the last bits. I realise now it's ESS. It all looks to be stamped on rough cast and the last ESS seems heavier and more drunken than than the first part LD3051.
Would this mean you have engine block LD8 ?

It's true that it is like a disease this classic car thing...I have 3 at the moment, Stag, 2.5PI Estate and a 2000 MK1 saloon. I really badly want a Stag to restore though, if I went ahead one of the others would have to go (NOT the Stag though!).

Drive a Stag every day... it's wonderful!

I think it is more like the 8th engine rebuilt than block no 8
I once had LF 25 which I got from an autojumble for £30 as a bare block with good bores, unfortunately when I came to fit the crank I found the main bearing caps were from another engine so ended up weighing it in.
LF25 was stamped on the block below the exhaust manifold, not at the back as on later engines, and there is no sign of any stamping here, although it could have been machined off I suppose
