fuel gauge

hi chaps,problem! while out today my fuel gauge packed up.it's as if there's no live to it as the needle is way over the left past the zero. the low fuel warning light is also on permently .there was plenty of petrol and when returning home i noticed the gauge creeping up to a quarter and then dopping down again anybody's help appreciated

Is the temp guage ok ? If it rises and falls it could be the resistor between them both on the back of the speedo, what happens when you pull the wires off the sender unit at the tank does the guage fall ?
That may show the fault is the sender ,

the temp gauge is normal, if i take wires from sender nothing happens as needle is to theleft of zero as if switched off.if i reverse wires on sender needle goes over to full

As the warning light is on all the time it sounds like a fault with the sender unit in the tank.

May be a punctured float or an internal fault.

That sounds like it , maybe take it out and play about with it connected up .
