Successfully stopped my fuel pump dribbling into the boot last night ansd went out to fill up today. After filling, noticed a bad petrol smell again. Eventually pulled out by boot drain grommets and got a pint of mucky petrol out to my great embarrassment in a restaurant car park - thank goodness for an understanding owner ! Drove gingerly home without a fire, and stripped the boot to investigate. Eventually found this breather tube with a major split in it. It's the one from the tank breather back up to half way up the filler tube. The rubber is totally cracked and perished - it was bought from a well known parts supplier a year ago.
The petrol was pouring into the boot well, and has stripped paint and soundproofing - the boot underfloor needs completely repainted - a pain. Lucky (a) I found the fault, and (b) not to have a fire.
I'm not sure if it's just a duff tube, or whether I inadvertently used a coolant hose, but I'm sure it's the right fuel breather.
Separately, my E J Ward aluminium tank is fine, but the sender unit is also leaking, but much less so. I think I will order a couple of gaskets for the sender unit and pack them in before refitting it.
Joy - but the car is going well meantime.
