Screechy Tyres

Recently over the past few months my tyres have started screeching quite badly whilst cornering at fairly low speeds. My tyres are Yokohama's and have loads of tread in fact they look like new. I have had the suspension overhauled new springs and shocks all round in the hope that this would cure it but it hasn't. I was wondering if it could be something to do with the age of the tyres they've probably been on about 10 years but I probably only do between 500 - 1000 miles a year. Could it be that the rubber is deteriorating ?

Age of tyres maybe but check the pressures very carefully as well. don't just take the tyre inflators word for it get a proper tyre pressure gauge

Hi, I am no expert but did get this link passed to me when I asked a question about tyre sizes, there is a section on it referring to the age of a tyre that should be 6 years maximum!

Check the age of the tyre with the 3-4 digit number on the tyres!

Failing that, I have had and seen this occur on cars where the tracking on the front is miles out (it does make you feel like you're in an American movie (with the screeching and the (lack of) speed you take into corners. Does it do it at any speed, on most road surfaces, and have you changed any part of the steering system recently?

10 year old tyres?

They will be so hardened by oxidation that I am surprised the car still corners at all.

Personally, whatever the mileage, and even if the car has stood in a garage 99% of the time, I change tyres after 4 years. One day you will need maximum grip in an emergency braking situation..............and 10 year old tyres will not give it.

Just reread it, 10 year old tyres would not help! A Porsche 944 I once bought on 10 year old Pirelli P6000s was once the twitchiest car I owned by far in the wet (compared to other RWDs I have owned). Coming to a halt on motorways until I changed the tyres was always an interesting experience even with a large stopping distance!

Almost certainly wheel alignment but due to the low mileage this is not showing up as irregular wear yet. Both tyres wearing on the outer sides equals toe in. On the inner sides equals toe out. If only showing on one tyre the problem might be camber or incorrect assembly after suspension work or damage. The so called age limit is the period within which a manufacturer will accept a claim under warranty. The actual condition of the tyres will depend mostly on storage conditions. Out in the sun by the seaside and ozone cracking could develop quickly. In a cool dark garage they can last for years without ill effect. The comment about pressures is very valid but I would get down to a tyre shop and get the alignment checked before anything else. John

I am ashamed to say I suffered Screechy Tyres the other day, my foot released the clutch and simultaneously hit the acealerator hard when pulling away from lights....
