diff ratios - are my calcs correct?

    Hi All

E-Lad, Gresley and myself have spent the last three days in the Lake District. Our small convoy of Gresley's Stag, E-Lad's Stag, my Stag and my wife's GT6 had a very pleasant drive on Monday from Cheshire to near Keswick via a scenic route through Pendleton, Gisburn. Settle, Ribblehead, Dent, Sedburgh, Windermere, Ambleside. Tops down or roof open(GT6) all the way.

We came back home today directly down the M6 and it gave me an opportunity to do direct comparisons between our Stag and GT6 whilst on a long journey, something which very rarely happens for obvious reasons!

Anyway, I know my Stag under reads on the speedo and mileage clock because it has a 3.45 diff fitted. However, I am surprised at the large difference in mileage recorded between the services near Lancaster and Crewe. The GT6 recorded it as 82 miles whilst the Stag says 67 miles. According to my calcs below the Stag is under reading by 10% which means it has physically covered 1.1 miles for every 1 mile recorded on the clock. So. 67 miles +10% is 74 miles so why the difference of 6 miles between the two cars? I think I need to take both cars out with the Satnav and see what they record over a measured mile. I also think I need to check the ratio of the diff fitted to the GT6!

Can someone please check my calcs below for the Stag?

    Thanks

    Bruce

      Hi Alan

I have amended the original posting to show the calc logic.

      Cheers

Don't know about your calculations Bruce, but this will explain your mpg question the other day!

sorry Bruce, i'm not too good at maths, hence the surprise, i see the logic in it now and it makes sence to me reading it again

By my reckoning Your figures for the 3.45 are spot on but there is a slight problem with your 3.7 figures.

3.7 (diff ratio) x 806 (wheel revs) = 2982 (prop shaft revs your figure 3039)

              2982 (above prop shaft revs) x 0.82 (4th OD ratio) = 2445 (engine revs)

              Difference between two diff ratios = 2445 - 2280 = 165

So by my calculations the difference is not as big as you have calculated. I cant see which figures you have worked for your percentage but as a percentage of the standard 3.7 diff ((165/2445) x 100) = 6.75%

              As a percentage of the "option diff" ((165/2280) x 100) = 7.24%

Bit late for this number crunching... I have a spread sheet with various options.
              Wheel and tyre sizes.
Stag auto box Stag manual OD box and Stag diff
              SD1 Standard box and diff
My SD1 box and my 3.45:1 diff

..... etc... the sheet calculates various steps of engine rpm / mph / or KPH for the continental and southern types for the different final drive ratios and tyre options. <~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Geek

                Hi Al

Actually it will make the mpg figures for the Stag even better as I had been basing them on the recorded miles off the clock which is at least 7% under reading the actual mileage

                  Hi Neil

Good spot. I have rechecked my excel file and I had a typo of 3.77 where I should have had 3.7 on the revs of the prop.

Thanks for taking the time to go through it all. Any change of having a copy of your spreadsheet?

                  Cheers

Will do it tomorrow as I need to clean it up for anybody else to make head and tail of it. (need to put some headers on the columns and stuff!)

If you got 37mpg before you must be getting closer to 50mpg now. Are you a fisherman as well?
