Dvla

Following a purchase of a second hand car back in early May from a small dealer i have been persuing the V5 log book nothing unusual about that until this morning when i recived a letter from the dvla stating they need more info about the car before they can issue a log book.

Do i need to be nervous in thinking that there is something lurking in the back of the darkness over this cars history

Hi Ade,

when i applied for one, with a change of keeper, address etc they asked me to expalin the reason for the application, so i sent a letter to them with the expainiation and a copy of the bill of sale, V5 returned a couple of weeks later. Lets say an ex persauded me to buy her a car then we split up, so i took the car back as i had a spare key, applied, sent the letter of explaniation with the bill and no problems.

dont forget it states on the top that the V5 is only the registered keeper not the owner. you need a bill of sale for that.

i dont think it's anything to worry about Ade, we had 2 trucks at work running round for 3 years on the wrong number plates, someone put them on the wrong vehicals, we only found out when we went to sell them and a buyer checked the VIN number on one of them

I sold a Stag about 10 years ago and just received a receipt from DVLA saying that it has been scrapped

One of our Astra Vans at work ran around for 3 years with the wrong number plates, the supplying dealer made up the plates with two of the digits the wrong way around, from new. Picked up at first MOT.
The engineer who used the van was very disappointed, but he did find it strange he never picked up a speeding ticket on a few occasions!
In reality we think he knew but never said anything, new tax discs, fuel card etc with the correct reg. number.

Given that the car came from a dealer should give you some comfort should there be an issue but as other have found the DVLA do not have a perfect record and number plate issues are surprisingly common. I had a Jag wth a V in the reg which should have been a U - my plates were on another jag but the dealer said it was OK because the driver of the other car hadn't driven it as he'd been banned for speeding...

I had to write a supporting letter when I applied for my V5. The previous "registered owner" was not the one I bought the car off as the car changed hands without the documents being updated because it was bought for spares only the last buyer didnt bother to notify DVLA of the sale. I believe but can't confirm that the previous RO was contacted to confirm the details but I got my V5c within four weeks of first application. (Now Im waiting for the latest red and blue version to arrive if it ever does!)
