    FUEL PUMP PROBLEM ????? I think

    In have a problem withmy stag it cut out on me i started it up pressed the accelarater and the engine stopped I went into the boot to check the pump switched on the ignition and nothing I tapped the pump and it started, I started the engine and thought i had cracked it, but there was a strong smell of petrol and it was running from under the engine no visible leeks, I switched off and tried to start it again but the pipump wasnt running can anyone help please, is there a pressure switch on these pumps, Thank you Martin

          Hi Martin,

          I think you have a couple of problems:
          Fuel pump: This should pump (audible tick) when fuel needs to be fed and stops when lines are pressurised (ticks slowly as some fule leaks back past the pump). The electric contacts sticking is a common problem as is the common solution (hitting the pump) pumps seldom stick when running normally only when they have been stood, the engine starts on the fuel in the float chambers and then cuts out. When I turn the ignition I always listem for the pump running.
          Fuel leak: Will commonly be coming from the pipe that runs down the front of the engine and is an overflow from the float chambers, this indicates one or both carbs fuel shut off valve is not shutting off as this happened after you ran out of fuel I'd guess one of them is stuck - tapping the carbs might free it but you really ought to take the carbs off remove the float chambers and re-set the floats.

            yes this car has only done 250 miles in 12 months now i have bought it and tried to use it, so is it better to take the pump off and strip it ????????? thank you Martin

              Taking the pump apart and giving it a clean will help. With SU pumps (or at least it seems to be the case) use seems to keep the points happy (and probably rust/dirt free!). Burlen and other SU suppliers do sell electronic kits to do away with the points in the pump .

              It's not quite the same as the Stag, but the principles are the same in this video if you can bear with the chap (in my case, a tap to the pump seemed to cure it!):



              One thing to bear in mind is that the pump does have a fuel inertia cut off switch so it may be worth checking that you have 12V at the pump with the ignition on No. II.

              The flooding issue at the front may be down to iffy floats, generally occurring after running the carbs dry of fuel.

                  Hi Martin, get rid of the points pump and replace with an electronic one, once they start playing up, you'll be very lucky indeed to repair them permanently, there are several on the market, try Googling LD Parts and Burlen Fuel Systems for a start. There's no pressure control on the pump, only its design maximum. Some pumps put out too much pressure, if you want to pop over, I can measure it for you on the new one. I doubt it's the inertia switch, but they are so simple, an inspection and clean up is a good idea. Your flooding is most likely the needle valves in the float chambers, I have known floats to leak but it's very unlikely, setting them to the correct height is important.                     Hi Martin I will take you up on that sometime I would like someone to have a look at what I have just purchased, the car seem to run fine I brought it back from Derby and it didnt miss a beat, I new about a small oil leak that is coming from a bracket next to the spin off oil filter and that doesnt seem to drip evertime, but the car seems sound and has had a lot of money spent on it the last owner had it for 10 years and has hardly used it the last 2 or 3 , I would be interested in changing the pump as you say once something starts playing up like that I think it needs upgrading rather than repairing as this car has had a lot of things changed rather than original, which I know some people will hate, but I hope to have something reliable that I can use , if you are ever near Kettering give me a call, on 01536511950 or 07733186659 I still work so I am their Monday to Fridays day shift, but of weekends and evenings, Thank you for your reply and I would like some help as my knowledge is limited regards Martin

                        I have just switched on the ignition and the pump ran rapidly then slowed down to about 2 beats every 15 seconds with no fuel leak
