    Plug Gap

Hi, Is 30 or 35 Thou ok for the plug gap?, Luminition and Flame thrower Coil fitted with high quality leads. I have the gap at 35 Thou at the mo... is that too much?

Anyone tried one of these gap setters...any good?

Sukh, the higher you go above the standard gap this increases the HT voltage, and so increases the likelihood of tracking.

So a larger plug gap will find if there are any weaknesses in your ignition HT circuit, i.e. coil, dissy cap, rotor arm, HT leads.

In a dry atmosphere tracking is less of a risk, but in our crappy damp weather, tracking can be a nuisance.

      Hi Sukh
The ROM states 0.024 to 0.026 inch or 0.625mm to 0.660mm which is what I am set to with no problems using a Newtronic Systems electronic ignition system which was fitted about 20 years ago with the standard 6volt coil and have used 'gap setters' looking similar to your picture (I brought mine from Halfords) and found it a little easier with the correct tool than using feeler guages
I havn't had any problems at all and starts on the button.

Got myself one of these alloy ones in metric and imperial...hope it's not a minute thing, it will be worth it if it is a couple if inches wide at least.
Sorry for the double attachment, having probs with loading pics.

I run at 30 thou with no issues at all. I should add that I have Pertronix and a Flamethrower coil...

              Thanks guys for the replies....

I sent a message to the people selling the above mentioned plug gauge (ebay) as to the diamensions(size). This is the reply I got, I am sure its a mistake otherwise I will need small hands and eyes the size of Octopi. Considering a penny has a diameter of 20.00mm.

              "Thank you for contacting us!

I have just checked this up for you, and I can confirm that the diameter of our Spark Plug Gap Tools is approximately 3.7mm.

If you have any further queries, please don't hesitate to contact us again, we are more than happy to help.

              We hope this helps!"

              Thank you & take care.

Wow! just read LDparts web site RE: sports coil and electronic ignition... suggests opening spark plugs to 40K (thou). Was directed to the site after "Staggering abouts" thread regarding "which coil".

NB - opening the points to 40mthou is recommended only if you have the higer performance lumention system plus uprated HT leads. With the standard lumenition system, 25thou is correct.

I ran an MSD system on the Cobra that recommended 55 to 60 thou gaps! (but ran better at 45 to 50). Getting a belt off that HT really hurt!

I had to close down my plug gaps from 35 thou to 25 thou despite the high power lumenition system fitted to both the TR and the Stag, as the spark was blowing out at over 6000rpm. Doesn't seem to be a problem until you get over 200bhp though
