    Rear wheel bearing play

Hi, just fitted new rear wheels and tyres and noticed that there was a fair amount of play on the wheel bearing. I set up a DTI and from what I can see I can rock the wheel by approximately 1mm and there is quite a pronounced clunk as it happens. I have recently fitted new bearings and collapsible spacers and I followed the ROM to the letter. I placed the Anvil of the DTI approximately in the middle of the side wall of the tyre so in reality the measured distance furthest away from the wheel centre would be even greater, and therefore moving closer to the centre of the hub would reduce the measurement.
Does this sound acceptable? I have tried to find some old posts regarding the issue but nothing seems to mention this sort of measurement. Am I faced with dismantling the rear half shafts etc,i hope not!
Yours comments will be gratefully received as always

AFAIK (and going by the acceptable limits) they should not have any play present. That is based what the manual says and the spare hubs I have picked up for my Stag with no play (like yours, they have around 1mm of play, probably enough to get an advisory).

Just checked what I had written down when I did the job, and both shafts were set to 0.005inch 5 thou. I suppose I must have got this wrong! I do remember that the DTI was a bit jittery. It's out with the shafts then. Damn

        Regards. Paul
