    Kerb weight ?

We have recently bought a caravan an have been touring the Cotswolds for the last two weeks, we are towing with a 4x4 but I was wondering if the stag would be capable of the job, not on a full time bases but for occasions such as national day so can any one tell me the kerb weight of the stag I am sure I must have it somewhere but cant find it

    Hi John,

    From memory it's around 1275kgs.

I towed our previous caravan at 1190kgs with no problem.

      John,

      From the ROM:

      Towing.jpg

Reading that, I have been using a 250Kg GW trailer for many years and often had it severly overloaded

However, this one finally gave up being abused recently and I had to scrap it. I now have a slightly larger one with a GW of 400Kg, but it isn't braked. The Stag tows it very nicely, but I now wonder where I stand legally

          Hi John,

I found I had to use some spring assisters for the rear.
I used the Grayston rubber ring type which slip between the coils. They seemed to do the job well enough.

See my post above with extract from the Specifications section of the ROM. 1275Kg is fine if the trailer is braked. 200Kg if not, which seems extremely low if you ask me.

A bit of info re trailers. Braked unbraked... lighting etc.. good valuable info which might keep us all the right side of what may seem to be obscure laws

                  Hi Neil,

The bit that I fall foul of is:

Unbraked trailersNo unbraked trailer is allowed to have a plated gross vehicle weight* of more than 750 kg. No unbraked trailer is allowed to have a plated gross vehicle weight that is more than half the kerb weight of the vehicle that is towing it.
*The combined weight of the trailer and the maximum amount of cargo it is designed to carry.

The 'plate' on my trailer was a sticky lable that fell off when I cleaned the chassis beam of rust. This showed 400Kg, which is well under half the kerb weight of the Stag. Yet for some reason, BL state the the max GW for an unbraked trailer is 200Kg, which seems very low.

200kg is low, half the kerb weight is three times greater.
I don't think I would worry about it, and go on the half the kerb weight.

On a side note I would like to know how much the tow bar protrudes beyond the rear bumper without the tow ball fitted.
A strange request, but my garage door clears my rear bumper by only 5mm, so if I fitted a tow bar I would have to bolt on the ball when required!

                    Cheers

Without the ball fitted the bar doesn't protrude as much as the over-riders so you would be fine. However it would be a PITA to remove the ball as the bolts hold the horizontal bar to the bracket and it is fiddly arrangement.
Measured from the rear of the blade my tow ball protrudes 95mm,which is not much more than the over-riders, but more than 5mm I would say.

The stag makes a great tow car , Fuel consumption goes out the window but its a good solid towcar. Ive driven trucks & trailers all over europe and moved some hairy heavy loads . I towed My caravan the other week with a peugeot expert van when the stag gearbox started to play up and I wasnt happy about how it felt , the stag just feels right. please PM me and I will give you my phone number if you want to ask anything about the stag and towing , Were off to Carlisle next weekend withe stag & Caravan to meet up with friends from Manchester area , Anybody going to be around ?

Thanks Kevin, would be very tight!

My garage is built under the house, with a long and short side.
The Stag was always parked on the long side, and my Elise the short side.
Then I sold my Elise for a Maser, knowing that the Maser was never going to fit in the short side...but never thought the Stag would be a problem. If the Stag was quarter of an inch longer...I don't know what I would have done!
