    Power Steering Pump Installation

It seems you have to install most items an average of three times when doing a restoration.
My first attempt to install the power steering pump today raised several issues.
    1. The new power steering hoses don't seem to have the right bends and foul the bottom steering column UJ. A bit of brute force should fix this.
    2. The cooling system rigid down pipe seems to foul the pump mounting bracket. Not sure how much clearance there should be??
    3. The pump drive belt fouls the radiator fan. This makes me think I've missed a spacer . Seems that the only option is to remove the radiator again. I'd only installed it twice so clearly once more is necessary.

Do you want me to bring some photos of my assemby with me when I visit New Zealand in December and hand them over to whoever in the Stag Club I'm meeting there, or is that too far in the future? Have had my power steering assembly off & on loads of times when I had to change both alternator and battery.
Alternatively could post a picture on the Forum?

Posts of pictures would be great. I've posted elsewhere that the cooling system was non standard when I bought the car. It was also LHD so I don't have before pictures to help with re assembly of stuff like the power steering hoses.

The link below will take you to a series of photos I have just taken from under my bonnet (from both sides).
        Things to note :-
1 - The Earth cable from the battery goes to a removable "red" key located in the "lifting hole" just by the PS assembly.
2 - Notice I have cut out a small piece of metal from just above the battery housing to make removing the battery easier.
3 - Note also the two small strong springs that help keep the PS bracket tight against the Cylinder Head, as the PS bracket bolt holes
have had to be "helicoiled" and the springs are just an extra precaution in case the bracket slips.
Hope the photos help in some way. PS. You can click on each photo to make it bigger.

Thanks very much. Clever place to put the battery isolator. As they say a picture paints a thousand words.
The pictures below are close-ups of exactly where I've got concerns.

          Cooling pipe.jpg
Is the cooling pipe mounting bracket in the right place as there seems little clearance to the bottom of the power steering bracket?

          Belt.jpg
Clearly this can't be right as the fan blades are hitting the power steering belt!

          Pipes.jpg
A photo showing the exact routing for the power steering pipes would help as one of the rigid pipes currently fouls the steering column.

Nick in answer to your questions :-
1 - The water pipe is very close the PS bracket - I can just get a crowbar in the gap to hold the bracket in place when tightening the belt.
2 - You appear to have got your fan fitted "back to front", which probably accounts for it hitting the belt, the blades should bend from the radiator down towards the belt (the opposite of how you have them if my fan is fitted correctly), and you should then have a finger width gap.
3 - The rearmost PS pipe on mine is very close to the steering column (never noticed before), a bit of adjustment on yours should see it just clear the column.

Hi Nick the water transfer pipe bolts to the front cover and your fan blades are much wider than mine Graham

Fan is definitely back to front. The metal carrier is not central in the fan so fitting it the other way round iirc will take the fan blades away from the belt.

                    Guys
Thanks for the help. It was a two steps back weekend. I had to take the petrol tank back out - found a leak into the boot. damn it I was only trying to install the in line filter in the overflow line!
                    After further review:
                    1. The fuel tank link may only be the drain plug not being tight enough Should there be any seal between the boot floor and the tank drain??
                    2. The fan is definitely back to front and the rad has to come out to reverse it.
