    Diff swapped today

Since I had the ZF gearbox fitted the 3.45 diff I was using was sapping acceleration, I had a Stag diff that I'd bought on eBay to hand so today DaveB came round to help (mainly do!) the swap. Dave has done a few swaps recently so we were able to complete the job in only 3.5 hrs, I now have a completely silent 3.71 diff and am very pleased, thanks once again to Dave for his invaluable assistance.

    Hi Ian,

Good bloke is that Dave B

Has it made a huge difference ! or is it just the price you pay to get the extra gear and more relaxed cruising speeds.

The ZF is great Ian, makes for a much more relaxed drive. Because the engine is now much quieter I really noticed the diff whine, now the diff is silent it's great.

I just popped round to see Dave, and the poor man looks worn out, if you don't stop Ian, there'll be nothing left of him to do my jobs ! Spot on Ian, he's a gem. Martin.

Ian did you remove the whole rear end or just the diff, I need to swop my diff and I'm sure I read on here that it can be done without removing the trailing arms.

Dave, you don't need to remove the trailing arms. Just undo the prop and driveshafts. It can be a struggle to get the extension housing out of the subframe arms.....easier the second time I found!

In this case we didn't have to remove the nose extension so we left that in place, only the diff & backplate came off, this meant we only had to remove rear exhaust, disconnect handbrake and lower the diff.

Thanks for the info guys, just bought a second hand diff complete with the extension housing, condition unknown as it came with a recently purchased Stag within a load of spares. It feels really smooth but I cant decide if I should just fit it and try it or renew seals etc and get the extension housing strentghened and then fit it.

Maybe the old saying "Do it once, do it properly" might help?

Seriously - I personally would overhaul/modify a component like a diff before fitting it.

I had already replaced the nose bearing within last 1k miles and the front oil seal was swapped out this time. Given that I now have a silent diff after a total outlay of less than £100 I'm satisfied, I don't see the point in fixing things that aren't broken.

I could be wrong but I think Wilf was referring to Dave m and not you Ian.
