AFAIK, the staked/peened driveshafts (Mk1(ish) items) can have their UJs changed, but this is generally more of a specialist job and the UJs cost significantly more than their circlip counterparts.
Regarding the original question I am led to believe that the staked UJs cannot be made to accept circlip UJs. In that predictament (one of my 'shafts was a staked UJ type) I went out and acquired a circlip driveshaft and Hub.
If the staked driveshafts and hubs can be machined to take circlip UJs I would be interested in hearing about it .
