    Torque the Crank Bolt

Struggling to get the Crank Bolt past 80 lb Ft. Any hints on how best to acheive this

Remember seeing a forum posting on this topic not so long ago but searching did not find it.

Does anyone have the link to this page by any chance.

    TIA

It is the bolt that holds the pulley and fan onto the crankshaft, the big one!

Hi , Im guessing that when you try and tighten it the engine turns over and you want to lock the engine ?

I put stillsons on the pulley and hold the engine and turn the bolt that way , or you could remove the starter and jam the flywheel with the ring gear with a big screwdriver , I hope this helps.

How big were the stillsons. I tried with an 8" pair but no luck

            Steve

You will have to hold the shaft behind the pulleys with a pair of 18" stillsons against the direction you are pulling to get it up to 120

That for the offer. I guess this will not be the first time I will need to remove this bolt so I dont mind shelling out a few bob t get the gear.

Dont forget you might have to swing the timing quadrant round to fit the stillys on or has someone already mentioned this, in that case Doh!:?

We've been here before....if its an auto I still find best and reliable way is to remove starter and jam the flexplate gear (I always tie a rope to whatever I jam the gear with in case it dissapeares inside the bellhousing).

I spent several night hours beforea National day using stillsons, ropes, belts, impact wrench (the neatest way to convert hexagonal to a circle) before I crept under the car. Use a very long extension on the top bolt and its easy.....

As recently posted, I borrowed an 18-volt impact gun from my local MOT garage. With the correct socket it won't round off the bolt and within seconds the bolt was out. Certainly a lot quicker than struggling to remove/replace the starter motor. Used the same gun to rattle the bolt back in. Don't forget threadlock on the bolt.
