Paul,
I did a top end overhaul on my car used thick payen gaskets the only oil leak I have is at the rear of the head where it meets the block right by the oil drain back hole from the head not a big leaks but never the less a leak. I would use a small bit of sealer around that area next time. I have a tube of Wellseal made by Stag it was sold on Ebay Its a silicone type sealer. I would put some on the gasket both sides around the drain back. My heads were flat and block flat I made sure everything was clean before installation but have the small leak. I used a anti sieze simillar to what is being mentioned here but does not give you a wet torque so I can use it on the thread I have no other issues in regards to head gasket installation. I did use Hylomar blue for the valve cover gaskets and have no leaks.
cheers Stuart
