    Alternator Belt

    Hi all, am thinking if changing the alternator belt on my MkII, do I need to take the fan off and the rad out to do this?

    NO ! unless you are EXTREMELY unlucky, it should slip between the fan and the rad. Martin.

      Doesn't taking the fan off involve taking out the radiator? If you can take it out without removing the fan it would say you quite a bit of hassle.

            Yes it will fit over the fan. Feed it over one blade at a time.

              Wow, This thread is good.I am due to replace both the alternator belt and power steering belt.I reckoned that was going to need the radiator out and fan off to do the alt. belt.I am rapped to find that the belt can be fitted over the blades one blade at a time.The PS belt I know is not that difficult to replace.Roll on next wet day.

                Hi Anthony,

                With some upgraded radiators (as on mine ) there isn't sufficient gap between the crankshaft pulley bolt and the rad however on most cars there is plenty of space to change the belts without disturbing anything - other than slackening off the alternator and PAS pump.

                Just check the gap between bolt head and rad - if your new belt will fit in that gap then it's a simple case of just threading it over the fan blades.

                Although the post is quite old, things haven't changed Good luck.

                  The old MF diggers with front mounted hydraulic pump meant a big job to do the fan belt. The trick was while replacing it to feed a spare over and cable tie it out of the way ready for next time!

                    We used to do that with the Routemaster's. Tie a spare set to the pump bracket, the pump for the Hydraulically charged brakes was mounted on the front of the Gearbox and driven by twin V belts. The gearbox was mid mounted and needed the Cardan shaft taking down to change them (8 nut's and bolts)

                      Thanks for the reply.Yes I can get the PS belt past the front bolt so I guess with a bit of fiddling I should be able to do the same with the alt. belt.As my belts have been on for about 9 years and over 40000 kms,I reckon a change is in order.We have our 30 years of NZ Stag Club of NZ get together at the end of Feb. so don't want any unnecessary problems.As the belts have done so well I won't tie a spare alt. belt as was suggested by tractorjames.However a good idea.
