steering column combination switches - removal of

Evening All

Has anybody got any good advice as to the easiest way of removing and refitting the right hand combination switch on the steering column? I have removed the shroud and unscrewed the swicthes at the top. The wiring harnesses are routed behind the metal plate that sits along the underneath of the column. Do I really need to remove all that and the column clamp just to change the switch? :shock:

Just to complicate things the immobiliser/alarm system is involved with the indicator switch wiring

Yes I think you do, but I shall eagerly await the opinions of the many 'Master Technicians' who regularly patrol this Forum.

I have just replaced the wiper switch as mine disintegrated and yes you do need to take the column clamp (quick release!) bit off to route the cable, it really isn't a big job though, as long as you know that there is a spring rivet thingto drive out.

Tell me more please - I've never been able to dismantle the steering colum adjuster and assumed it was just bent or something.

The ROM and Haynes manual have an important bit missing! If you look carefuly at the housing there is a roll pin through the housing which prevents the release lever from pulling out. Drift the roll pin out with a nail or similar and then you can dismantle it with ease. Obviously it's there for safety so push it or a new pin back in.
