    fuel leak

Just returned from a nice day at brands, stopped for fuel on A3 car would just abouit idle and a occasional
smell of petrol, on return found a small puddle of petrol at the back of the v. found overflow pipes are cracked etc
so i am assuming that is the leak, is there a reason why they would overflow and would that cause the problem with idle.

    Many thanks Glyn

Hi Glyn, it sounds like our old friends, the needle valves, the float chambers overfill and the extra petrol runs out the overflow pipes and down the front of the engine, petrol in the V is a disaster waiting to happen so I would replace the pipes pronto. Martin.

Well I am glad you got back Glyn. I noticed it didn't start that well when you left, and I was about 1/2 hour behind you and keeping a lookout.

Good oh, that's the "urgent" dealt with, and as that strange person in the Canaries says, new needle valves and float chamber gaskets. When you come to do those, sing out, there are a couple of tips about float heights and so on. Martin.

Given the incident that was reported on here a while ago I checked mine only to find a split in the underside of one hose , that's sorted now and as a precaution everthing now has nice new fuel pipe clips fitted as well (not hose clips) so if a needle valve fails fuel can only exit from the pipe on the front of the engine to the road.

              Ian.

                and into the engine.........

Agreed you dont want it to leak out on top of the engine. The offside breather pipe needs to be re-routed under the carb though if it is to function as an overflow.
