    Strange noises x 2

Hi all, I wonder if any of you have come across this problem.I have owned my Stag for all of a week now and now have a strange noise or 2 to be exact. The first one is coming from the power steering belt, any ideas as to how you can get it tighter, I've tried slackening off and then retightening, holding the reservoir up as hard as I can, still sweaks intermittently and for 20 secs or so from cold.

Second strange noise is I think coming from the auto box (BW35), after a fair run at speed (legal ones!). Came to a stop and put in neutral/park, noise seemed to be emanating from top of engine (6/7/8), but when put into gear again, noise disappeared hence thinking auto box, rather than engine related. Sounds a bit like a noise clutch release bearing if it was a manual. Once it had cooled down again, noise had lessened.

    Thanks Nigel

PS Car is great, just need to make sure I use it..

Hiya, question one, the belt is probably old and shiny, try a new one. When tightening, push a large screwdriver through the engine lifting eye by the pump, that gives you plenty of leverage to lift the assembly while you apply spanners. Have you checked the trans fluid level as per the book of words ? Martin.

Could be the alternator belt if it is only for the first 20 seconds or so after start up, as the alternator is working flat out initially after starting.

Does it squeal again when you turn your lights on?

Quick test to see if it is the belt, when you hear it, pour some water on it, not a lot, just use a small watering can or similar, if it goes quiet, you know it's the belt slipping. Then tighten as Martin says.

(A tip passed onto me over 40 years ago by an old school mechanic).
