    combustion chamber volumes

I have,in a round about manner, asked this question before but as I have a pair of heads on my bench I thought I would ask it again. I know that a number of guys are using mark 1 heads with domed pistons. My new engine has the domed pistons and the heads that I am installing are mk 2. I have an old mk 2 head that I can check for shape and volume but would like to know what sort of tools grinders/cutters would I use to reshape the combustion chambers and take them to the same c.c. as the mk 2. I have read that standard grinding stones would soon plug up with the aluminum and become ineffective.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Dave the make a stone that will grind aluminum but it still clogs up although not as fast as the grinding stones for regular metal, the carbide type grinding cutters with the ball end will work but be very careful very easy to grab and dig into the metal. I would cover the head face just in case you run over with the stone.

    cheers Stuart

i have in the past successfully ploughed out alluminium parts using a die grinder capable of speeds of up to and more than 22000 rpm. the speed is an extremely important factor.tool bits ive used are tungsten carbide burrs coarse not fine and believe it or not wood routing bits with only two cutting edges ,this is why the speed is imprtant. also vital is two handed grip and try to steady forarms on table or whatever to ensure hands are steady and do not waiver as neil flying farmer said use a tape to cover areas not to be machined .something like gaffer tape is good and solvent easily cleans off glue. also parrafin can be used as a coolant, aids cutting and helps reduce clogging .amount of material to be removed at any one go should be kept to very light cuts wafers if you like .rule is high speed low feed and go slowly
thats my advice .done it a few times .

        Dave,
this is the type I was talking about

as Steve says its easy for the tool to grab and high speed light cuts works

        cheers Stuart

just another thought Dave if you can get them the small emery bands will work we used to call them dolly bands but now I am going back a bit, they fit over a rubber type driver looks like a grinding stone only rubber about 1 inch in dia.

I have used the white stones for grinding Al heads. I think it is Al oxide. Works well but wears down quickly so you need a few spares.

Am I missing something here.I thought that the domed pistons were the Mk2 and if you are using Mk2 heads as you say you are then there is no problem. As I say if Im misreading(or got something wrong) please correct me..

You are correct: What I meant to say is that my new engine has the domed pistons and the heads I hope to install are mk 1.
              Thanks
              Dave.
