Anyone tried learning Hungarian?

I have to spend a bit of time in Hungary over the next year, and thought I'd try to "speak a bit of the lingo", partly to make life a bit easier, and partly so I don't look like a typical pleb tourist that thinks a foreigner will understand you as long as you shout louder.....

Has anyone on here tried? What's it like to learn and have you any recommendations on learning material?

I have a bit of German, French and Spanish (and according to my wife Canadian but that's another story) so not a complete knob at learning other tongues (that phrase almost deserved an oooooherr missus) but the alphabet looks a bit odd and pronunciations of paired letters almost nonsensical....

you won't like the answer ... Hungarian is not one of the easiest languages to learn...... i don't even think it is Slavic in origin, more akin to Finnish or Estonian. if you are spending time in/around Budapest then you will be fine with English or German. If you know Polish it won't help, they are pretty different.

It is always worth trying, but given the quite particular pronunciations you may have trouble being understood even if you have the right word !

Sounds like I'm damned if I do, and damned if I don't ........ I will be spending the vast majority around Budapest, so as you say I should be OK with English, but it's still nice to give the courtesies in their own language......

Its also nice to know if they are swearing at you or taking the piss in Hungarian......

It had useful phrases such as "please fondle my buttocks", "my hovercraft is full of eels" and "do you waaaant to come back to my place, bouncy bouncy, I am no longer infected" - think they may get me punched or arrested....
