Yea I thought that, but I wondered if I could then torque it all down to say 60 Lb/ft to compensate given that the ROM says to torque upto 65. Looks like it's going to be two new gaskets tho'.
Unfortunately the studs/bolts can and sometimes will stretch if you go to 65lbs depending on their age/quality so not worth the risk the either.... better you wait and do it properly......
Do you want to tell us what you did? Even stupid mistakes are useful to others if telling them stops them doing the same........
This is embarrassing but what the heck. I initially lapped all the old valves into the heads some years ago and recently decided to swap the exhaust valves for un leaded versions ( I say recently, it could have been years ago now). I changed the valves on one head and in all of the euphoria I must have misplaced the valves for the other, until I found them today! Over the last couple of weeks I have checked all the valve clearances and purchased £40 worth of shims and finished off the head builds. This was followed by the trial fitting of the heads, timing chains and inlet manifold, and this weekend I torqued one head down followed by the inlet manifold to both heads and finally the second head was bolted up. It was whilst I was looking for the new cam cover bolts that I found the four new exhaust valves! So, with both heads fitted what do I do next? I think I can remember which head has the new valves fitted but I am not sure so sods law dictates that the first head I remove will be the wrong one, ergo two new gaskets required, £60 thank you very much! Followed by another tenner for new shims because I know only too well that I won't have the right thicknesses after lapping in the valves.
What an elimentary mistake, but in my defense, when I only get an hour here and a couple of hours there, it can sometimes be difficult to remember exactly where things are at. We must all be in the same boat though.
If I was a boxer my corner would have thrown the towel in quite some time ago.
So, what to do next?
Oh and to cap it off I think I have scuffed the sump gasket whilst fitting the timing chain cover. Ho hum.

Don't worry about it Paul - we are all human and screw up by omission..... every time I do timing chains and tighten the final bolt on the chain cover, I can't work out if I have knocked over the jackshaft bolt locktab or not - I know I have but the doubts always creep in..... leastways every time the doubts get too much and I remove the cover again, the tab is bent over as it should be.......

This is what I am finding. I am making annoying mistakes, or something seems much more difficult than it should because I only get the odd half day to work on my car. At least thats my excuse to myself.

Well at least I am in good company. I did this just recently I went from being totally convinced everything thing was OK when I put the timing cover back on to just a hint of a doubt. Which quickly grew to a nagging doubt then I finally convinced myself the lock tabs on the Jackshaft bolt had not been folded over. Off came the timing cover just to confirm everything was in order - It was!
I think a lot of 'weekend mechanics' have the same problem, 30 mins here then mow the lawn another 20 mins then stop for lunch etc

So glad you have found the real reason - I was starting to think it was because I am getting old
I think sometimes it's because I've done so many over the last 30+ years, I do things literally without thinking about it - because I did it on autopilot, then it's no wonder I can't remember and I start to doubt myself - should slow down - god knows my body keeps telling me
