    Nissan drive shafts

    Can anyone please advise ins and outs of fitting Nissan driveshafts to Stag?
    Which Nissan model driveshafts are compatible and what, if any, re-engineering is required?
    As usual, all info and advice gratefully received.
    Weather forcast good for tomorrow!

    You need the shafts from a 180B or other Datsun of that era. The UJs are bigger so machining of the yokes is reqd.
    Tonypy1 is the man to speak to although I may have had his last ever set some time ago, the shafts you need are getting quite rare now so good luck!

      What he said.............

      Except that there were some Tri-Dat U/Js made in Australia some years ago where this conversion started. They allowed for direct connection of the Datsun shaft to the Triumph hub without machining. Expensive, and may be hard to get now, but may be worth and ask of our Australian contributors.

        Just wondering why people fit Datsun shafts. What's wrong with the Stag ones?

          Fit and forget. No having to strip them out annually to re-grease - I know it doesn't take too long, but it's one thing less to do. The Triumph ones are getting old now and many of them have worn splines, leading to additional play in the transmission.

          I had the original type for 19 years, but when a set of the Datsun ones became available 4 years ago I fitted them. No regrets..............

            The Datsun ones use ball bearings instead of just splines and are less prone to sticking. Also they are stronger.

              The TriDat hybrid UJs are still available I got mine from;

              Australia,

              Tel. ++ 61 7 3821 0622

              He is very helpful, he does have a website with an email contact option.
              I have no connection apart from being a very satified customer of his.

              You can machine the Triumph hubs and diff flanges to accept the Datsun UJs and this is probably the best way to go, the better option is to obtain the diff flanges from a saloon car as they have more "meat" therefore the walls are stronger after machining. The UJ retaining circlips on the Datsuns are on the inside instead of the outside on the Triumph installation.

              They make great a difference to the way the car handles corners, you will be expecting the "Triumph Twitch" as you exit a corner and change gear for a while after the retrofit and be pleasantly surprised it has dissapeared and doesnt reappear!

              Most Triumphs Down Under have this mod.

              regards,
              Raoul

                    I never knew that they had to be stripped and re-greased annually. I assume we are talking about the splines here. My 2CV has a grease nipple for that. I'm going off Stags!

                      Some have fitted a grease nipple to make this easier. I never had to do mine every year anyway though. Probably every 3 years on average. If you search this forum there are several posts about fitting a grease nipple.

                        Hi Steve

                        Check out this previous thread as i include the details of the company that made up my Hybrid U/J this saves having the Yoke machined etc.

                        One pair is the size for the Stag Yoke and the other pair is the correct size for the Datsun Drive Shafts.

                          All,

                          Didn't I see a post where someone had drilled and tapped a hole in the shaft and fitted a grease nipple to ease the application of the essential grease.

                            All,
                            You can buy TRIDAT (Triumph Datsun) UJ's here in Australia through a company run by Greg Tunstall in Queensland, certainly that's where I got mine about 18 months ago. I find the Datsun halfshafts to be just great. Suggest you get in contact with Greg - saves any machining.

                            Regards Neil
