    Tapping out a cylinder head!

Hi all, just been trying to refit the inlet manifold to the cylinder heads and as you can guess one of the threads in the head has stripped. I know that the "normal" thing to do is have a helical fitted but has anyone ever tried to tap the hole out maybe to the next size up metric equivalent? I have quickly tried an M8 setscrew in the hole and it won't go in so I suspect that this may be the appropriate size.
If this is not a good plan is it possible to fit helicoils on a DIY basis at home?

    Thanks

    Paul

Helicoil fitting is quite straightforward, and if done properly will be better than original. Plenty of low cost kits available on ebay. I would do all, of them while you are at it, and test each one with a bolt afterwards.

Hi Paul, Helicoil as Chris says. Please don't change the size of one bolt, you'll cause utter confusion to the next bod who has to deal with it. Don't forget, the Stag is a bit like a stately home, you're just looking after it for the next generation ! Martin.

Paul, done lots of these myself and it's easy subject to taking care with a few points:

        - the set will come with an HSS drill bit to enlarge hole prior to tapping; it's crucial to tape or mark the bit to ensure you don't drill down too far into the soft ally and hit a water channel (guess how I know this...)
        - use a light, battery powered drill; you can control the speed; to get the holes drilled square (to manifold face) keep a set square handy and keep checking the drill isn't running offline
        - usual rules about tapping a few threads, backing off to break u[p swarf, etc; use some cutting compound or grease on tap
        - as above, test the insert by refitting the set pin inside a socket or big nut, and torque to 25+ ft

The Australian 'Recoil' kits come with all the items required, but there are other makes...

As Chris has said - I would suggest helicoiling them all at the same time then you won't have any extra surprises when re-fitting.
