Rear Crank Oil Seal - advice please?

    My crank also has this groove and it's so perfectly formed and quite deep and pronounced that I can hardly believe that it's just due to wear.

    Faced with the same dilemma, i decided to search for a double lipped seal and came up with the company Bearing-King and found this seal:

    375 300 37 R23

    I haven't fitted it yet, and will first see what lip fits in what groove etc.

    Bearing King delivered incredibly quickly and within about 3 days the seal was with me here in Germany.

      Hi Dean, I dont have a vernier guage and took a punt at what size I needed - exactly 3" as I measured it using a steel rule - wish me luck! I wouldn't copy me - not yet anyway - I'll let you know how it goes when I get it...for the record I ordered a SKF CR99300 Hardened Stainless Speedi Sleeve for Shafts 3.000-3.006 inch (CR.99300). Just hope it's the right thing!

          Hi Bernard, Use a product called Redi-Sleeve. Its a thin hardened S/Steel sleeve which taps on, it comes with a tool to install with a tear off rim. Availible in a mulitude of sizes from engineering/bearing suppliers.

                The Bearing King search only seems to work for bearings. If you go to the main page and oil seals, you can scroll down the list.



                I bought two, just in case, so if you want one you can have it from me when you collect your cider!

                  Just an update on my progress, I've fitted the double lipped seal and mounted it slightly proud of the housing (about 1.5mm I guess) so it shouldn't be sealing in the wear groove on the crank. It feels nice and tight on the shaft (oooh misses!) and would be amazed if that doesn't resolve the leak. In fact it felt like it was sealing so well I decided not to fit the cap I had also bought, so if anybody's interested (it's brand new and unfitted) please pm me, I'll take £15 for it + postage. (It cost around £25)

                      Hi Klaus,

                      Hoping to get the engine back in the car this weekend, will update this thread once it's up and running - keeping my fingers crossed there's no leak but also know what a pain in the *ss my Stag is sometimes!

                        Engine now back in car and 120miles later I dont see any drips from the rear crank seal area, hopefully the double lipped seal slightly proud of it's housing has made all the difference - as with all these things I guess time will tell.
