    Fuel Cap Lock

Just getting ready to fuel her up for a test, and realised the PO did not supply a key for the fuel cap. I managed to dismantle it and have now taken out the lock, but there is no marking of key number that I can see. Not sure if I will have to buy a Rimmers replacement lock/key at £15 and even if it will fit.

Any suggestions how to get a suitable key? Maybe a locksmith will know?

You could cheat, make the lock fit your key. Put your ignition/door key in the barrel, then file off the brass tumblers that are sticking out, so they are flush. It does work, this is how my cap lock is working.

Yes I could try that trick. I might try the locksmith first though. Cheers

Worried now, about the level of lock-abusing skills displayed on this forum.........

Not just this forum, but also Practical classics who did a feature on how to make your lock open with a certain key.

One question I wish to ask is if the Stag had one key to operate both doors, the ignition barrel and fuel cap, or was the fuel cap a different key altogether?

Mine has the same key for all these locks and I believe they all would have originally.

i had all 3 original keys with mine when i bought her, the ign, doors and cap are all the same key, as is the glove box lid and the boot on the small FS key

                hope this helps

Ign and doors are the same key for me, boot and cap a different (and much smaller) one.

OE was one for doors, ignition and petrol cap, plus a small FS series key for boot and glovebox. Same as Alan's above.

The problem is that during the years locks or ignitions have broken or worn out and full sets are no longer available. So compromises have been made in many cases.

My Ford Cortina Mk2 keys opened a lot of cars with a jiggle, in fact even a lolly pop stick would open a Cortina lol
Just testing with mates cars at the time lol

I dont know how the lock works! I filed the tumblers so that the key would turn the lock mechanism but you can undo the flap whether the key is turned or not!

If you take the key out of the cylinder, before you refit it, you should see several of the tumblers pop up, they are the ones that stop the lock from opening, when it's refitted.
