    Automatic stalling when slowing down

    Hi guys,

Well she's [Stag] had a few long runs now and is purring very well. Nearly a "major" issue with the new fuel hoses (clamps were just a bit big for the 7.5mm ID hose from Halfords) so +1 for checking things before driving off

Anyway... Coming off the A303 onto the Salisbury road after a 60-odd mile bimble I duly came up to the roundabout, put my foot down to get round and *nothing*. Its happened a few times, when warm. It slows down and rather than idling she just dies. I'm thinking:
    1. Timing: I'm getting her timed and tuned next week.
    2. Torque converter: Maybe the idle circuit isn't kicking in or for some reason it's not able to "do whatever it does" when disconnecting idle?
    3. Sparks: It sounds like all 8 are firing, but could that have an effect?

If I slow down and "cruise" to the end of the road she doesn't stall - it seems to be worst when it's, say, slowing from 50 to 0.

She's very lumpy on choke when cold, starting off doesn't sound at all smooth.

Any ideas? I'm getting her tuned next week so hopefully that might sort something out.

What's the idling revs in N and in D?

Running a bit rich Al. As Kevin suggests, idle should be between 500 and 800, closer to 800 and it should only change a small amount between drive and neutral, tune up should sort it. It doesn't really sound like an auto issue. Martin.

        Thanks for the responses guys.

Kevin, it's idling around the 7-800 mark in neutral, drive drops down to about 500-600.

I'll let you know how it goes after the tune on Tuesday.

        Cheers,

        Al.

          HT coil failing when hot.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

I used to have a Cortina that would idle badly and stall if you blipped the throttle. It was a cracked valve seat. Hopefully that isn't the problem here but maybe worth a compression test as a next step if it comes to it.

this is proberly a carb set up issue

with warm engine and on idle. blib the throttle sharply. does it try to stall.or drop in revs before picking up again?

make sure it is idling correctly on the idle screws and not being held open by the throttle linkage,as when braking or de-accelatering it can do as you are finding

unclip the throttle likage and balance the carbs with the idle screws, then reattatch throttle linkage

As Alan says it sounds like the carb balance/linkage needs sorting. I had one like this recently, and is now running fine after balancing and resetting of rods.

Forgot about that, although it's not that likely, make certain the kickdown cable isn't too tight and stopping the throttle from closing properly, I've come across this a few times, as with Alan's suggestion, disconnect the kickdown cable while the rods and accelerator cable are set up. Martin. ( I do hope the folk doing your tune up know Stag carbs well )

Thanks guys. I've had the carbs stripped and balanced by someone who *actually* knew what they were doing and it's going for a fuel-mix analysis on Thursday (using west-tuning.com : anyone had any experience?). It has cured the stalling problem but is now a pig to start when cold Very spluttery and lumpy, needing a bit of TLC at 1k rpm for 5/10 mins or so. Ho hum.
