Hi can any one throw some light on my problem.
Stag came out for a ride first time this year, all seemed fine for 30 miles then going up hill it started to miss, cough,
and back fire when I put my foot down till it came to a halt on a very busy road
(don't you just love it when they do that and all other soft tops looking at you as they go pass with that knowing grin)
Home on tow truck thinking the worse but it started up and ran up and down the road ok.
Is it the coil? owner for 32 long years and still love the challenge thanks Dave Exeter
Hiya Dave, it's likely a sticking valve, which may cure itself with use. If the backfire was from the exhaust, it's an exhaust valve, if from the front, then an inlet valve. Either way, probably nothing to worry about, unless it does it a lot. Martin.
Hi Martin thanks for your reply, it came from the back and a big black cloud with it, it would not start afterwards but when I got home it did start so that's why I thinking coil, when its cold its ok but breaks down when hot,
If it was a valve would it have gone 30 miles?
Thanks for your help Dave.
That sounds exactly what happened to my car travelling back from Fontwell Park, it turned out to be the metal ball inside the inertia switch was covered with corrosion. bdown2.jpg
Have you got Lumenition fitted ? I had exactly that happen to me and eventually I could reproduce the problem by wiggling the three wire loom that comes out of the distributor.
Rang Lumenition to buy a new part and they said I wouldn't need a new part, I just had to open up the male connectors att the end of the loom to make a better contact. It worked

Hiya, obviously it's difficult to diagnose at this distance, but it could well be something nice and simple like coil or a stuttering fuel supply, always go for the easy bits first. Martin.
I am on my way home now. I have a few spare coils in the garage that you are welcome to try. Give me a shout tomorrow if you need help. I am in Pinhoe.

I had this in the TR a couple of years ago on the M6, coasted to a halt and checked to find the HT lead was coming out of the coil.
Most likely a coil problem I think, but I have also had a lumenition which used to fail after about 50 miles
