    TR7 5 speed into a Stag

Hello all my name is John and new to this Forum. Bought a 73 Stag a couple of months ago and busy tearing it apart for a complete ground up restoration. I'm very fortunate that it is a very low mileage rust free car but has spent a lot of time standing, also it has a few mechanical issues.

It has the type 35 auto which I have been researching a replacement for. Which leads me to the question will a TR7 5 speed handle the V8 seems an obvious choice as the 4 speed plus overdrive Stag box is difficult to come by.
Hope you will be able to put me on the right path. John

    Welocome to the Forum John.
Quite a number of people on here have swapped their BW35 or BW65 auto gearboxes for a ZF 4-speed and from reading what they say,
it has made a big difference.
Of course if you want to change to a manual box, there are a number of people on here who have done that also.
I am sure you be getting lots of advice soon.

As Avcool says The TR 8 did use the same 5 sp LT77 gearbox as the 4cyl TR7 and he is also right about the bell housing etc. but if you are in Australia there are local suppliers here in OZ that can supply eg. Triumph Rover Spares over in Adelaide will have the bits for the conversion at a cost that might seem pricey but compared to buying O/S but with the exchange rate as it is since the arse fell outta the A$, it will probably be cheaper in the long run.
The LT77 gearbox is really only just up to the job of transferring the extra torque of the standard 3.5 Rover V8 so you might be better off with a Toyota 5 sp and a bellhousing to suit from Dellow up in Sydney.
Here is a link to a forum that specialises in TR7s and 8s http://www.forum.triumphtr7.com/ the crew there are very knowledgeable and helpful.

Thank you for the greetings guys. The ZF would be great but the cost for me prohibitive, but the LT77 from a TR7 which car I can purchase locally for $150 if viable seems on the face of it the way to go. Wondering if the flywheel, pedal box etc might be adaptable?.
Bad news today, after COAXING the engine out with the heads stuck, one stud on the left bank three on the right bank, which the extractor I got from Tony Harris would not shift. I had the nuts (no) welded on the studs, well it diddn't work, back to the Birmingham screw driver and wedges.

"As Avcool says The TR 8 did use the same 5 sp LT77 gearbox as the 4cyl TR7 and he is also right about the bell housing" OK. what did he say?.

Finally tonight has anybody researched the LT77 gear ratios

        Thanks all, John

I once fitted a dolomite sprint gearbox to a stag engine using the dolomite adaptor plate with a couple of holes redrilled to suit.
On the basis the sprint block is the same as the TR7, you should be able to redrill the adaptor plate for the TR7 engine to fit the Stag block. I am pretty sure the clutch plate for the Rover V8 is the same size as the Stag clutch, for which you need a stag flywheel.
I cannot remember if the TR7 flywheel would fit the Stag crankshaft, I think the number of bolts may be different, but I scrapped my spare one years ago so can't check
5th gear on the LT77 is very similar to the overdrive ratio on the Stag box

Thanks Mr flying farmer? do you know how to find Avcool as Mr Speaking stated the he knows something, was not able to use the link as I'm not a member.
As an aside I have managed to get the left hand head off. John

Well looking into the possibility of fitting a TR7/8 not sure of stick location yet, job been complicated by the chance of 2 Stag boxes, waiting for photos to see if they have an overdrive unit attached. Any body wont one?. They have been offered to me for $750. each.
Starting a new thread on the head removal saga.

That is a 1300/ 1500 overdrive box, the torque from a stag engine would destroy it, they struggle to cope with the 2 litre straight six

                      Hi John,
I converted my Stag from a Rover 3500 engine + BW65 auto box to same engine (rebuilt) but with a manual gearbox. I looked at an LT77 box but was advised that they are not a smooth as the Toyota option and can be a bit Land Rover like. To be fair I never tried driving an LT77 so all I had to go on was 2nd hand stories.
I opted for the Toyota 5 speed from TRS Spares in Adelaide and have never regretted it, I love the short change & the 5 speeds. Yes, the switchover was a fair bit of work, but worth it IMHO.
                      Regards Nei lHenderson

Thanks again Neil, I just wondered what it was, so I could tell the vendor.

I have an RV8 with a LT77 gearbox. I have had to shorten the shift change to suit the car... Its a tricky job to do yourself but you can buy a kit from Monarch if you have a spare few hundred quid. I too have heard the stories re shift change but have also been advised to use normal engine oil instead of gear oil or ATF to fix the problem. You can get a stronger gear box (R380) which is the LT77 gear box with bigger bearings... would be a better bet than the LT77 really but they are also a lot more money!
