    Psychology

I wanted to fit a dual water temp/oil pressure (both mechanical) gauge in place of the original water temp instrument.

Knowing that the car likely would have oil pressure in the region of 50psi, I didn't want a gauge with 0 -100 psi, as pyschologically, I would feel better with a needle sitting past half way rather than under or on it. I also wanted 0 - 110C, mainly because my head works in Centigrade, not Fahrenheit, and I also didn't want the C-N-H version.

    I found a 0 -60psi and 0 - 110C guage (nominally a Lotus item) at Holdens, everyone else had 100psi versions.

The gauge came with an adaptor for the temperature capillary bulb that fitted into the same place as the existing electrical sender, and the capillary tubing was plenty long enough to route across the dash and out of a nice big existing hole where the wiper rack enters. The Stag dash has to be one of the simplest to take out!

Oil pressure fitment was with a standard t piece to retain the oil pressure warning light switch.

Fairly straightforward fitting, I now know the cars runs 50 - 55psi hot at 3000rpm, idle pressure is 35plus. I think they are reasonable figures for a TV8. Temperature wise (and I did check the calibration of the gauge in boiling water first!) she runs 85 to 90C on the move, creeps up to 95 stuck in traffic, when the electric fan (also newly fitted) cuts in and brings it back down.

With a break only to watch some beach volleyball (has to be done, eh chaps?) it was an enjoyable Sunday's tinkering.

Picture of the guage was taken after shutdown, so some heat soak is responsible for that reading!

Oh - for clarity, it was women's beach volleyball.

      Tough decison to make now.

Do I "distress" the new gauge to make it look like the rest or take all the rest out and restore the matt black on the bezels to match the new one?

And I really must tidy up that Lumenition wiring........

Wilf, why dont you route most of the wires behind the foam pad, thats quick and easy to do.

Just what I was about to suggest. It amazes me how many otherwise tidy engine spaces are spoiled by untidy Lumenition wiring. Nearly all of it can be trimmed and hidden behind the foam pad.

Tidying the Lumenition wiring is now firmly on the agenda.

Stagdad - I drive a bright yellow Stag with the name "Buttercup" on the drivers door, the name alone doesn't quite cut it under those circumstances.........

Hi Wilf, nice job there, I've checked the holdens web site and cant find your gauge, was it special order or did you see it in their full catalogue.I plan to combine my water/ oil gauges in the near future and your set up looks ideal.

                thanks. peter.c

It's probably worth pointing out that MGBhive has the conventionally marked dual gauge at about two thirds of that price. Martin.
